How long does it take for the p/s fluid to circulate through the whole system, including the reservoir? Also, does the P/S circulate when the car is in idle (without steering)?
Thanks

yes and quick. i had a half inch hose on my outlet so that i could start the car and run the fluid into a bucket. well i started the car and the hose shot fluid all over the place, even 20 feet away. that stuff moves quick. quicker than a garden hose. i think it took about 2 seconds to empty my entire system of fluid and start spitting bubbles out the clear hose i attached.

Dee da dee da dee da dee da...

Under Pressure...

Yeah, it moves fast and with a typically small capacity, it won't take very long to circlulate throughout the system.

I've opened the p/s reservoir with the engine idling and no steering input and the fluid whips around quite vigorously!

That would have nade a great You-Tube clip had someone been filming it.

Depending on the system, PS fluid may not cirulate at all, if the steering wheel is dead center.
Fluid pressure is there for when it's needed.
My 2¢

yeah its quick. the best way to flush a PS system is to unhook the return hose from the resevoir. plug the inlet part to the resevoir with whatever you can find and point that inlet hose down into or towards a container.. then fill up the resevoir (or make sure its full) then crank the car after you put the top back on and turn the wheel to the right or left until you hit the bump stops then shut the motor off quick (this shouldtn take but a few seconds at most).. go back and fill the resevoir up again and crank and turn the wheel to the opposite side and shut off the motor............. attach the inlet hose to the inlet return part of the resevoir and fill accordingly. it takes no time and if you use ATF fluid it will take a little over 2 qts for flush and refill.. not too shabby
