Overdose of fuel add = quick engine failure?

A friend of mine has a 2002 Daewoo Leganza that seems to have failed pretty badly. It seems that something in the top end has broken.

We recently put in a 5.25 oz bottle of Lucas UCL (he wanted the UCL and I wanted the bottle), but I just realized that he may not have filled the tank since then. I can't remember how much fuel was in the tank at the time.

Assuming the worst -- that the tank was below half and not refilled, and then driven for about 100 miles -- could an overdose of UCL have contributed to the failure?

In cased it matters, I do know the maintenance habits were not always consistent. Oil changes were done with Wal Mart Super Tech dino and were supposedly done every 3k-5k miles, but a few OCIs were missed and one may have extended to nearly 30,000 miles. I also recall that the transmission fluid had been allowed to run so low that there was none on the dipstick. After about 130k miles of that, the most recent oil change was with Mobil 1 10w30. Needless to say, it has never seen a tank with higher than 87 octane fuel.

I'm not looking to blame Lucas or get into a shouting match about fuel adds. I just want something to tell my friend about why his car left him and his family stranded near a bad neighborhood.

Not familiar with that product but 5.25 oz. is not much. More likely it is daewoo-itis and poor maint.

I seriously doubt it was the UCL OD. Daewoo is not exactly a quality car, and sounds like it was neglected. Still not bad for that car and 130K+ miles.

Probably human nature to believe "the most recent thing he did" contributed to the car's demise. I'll suggest it was 6 years of "not doing things"

Thanks,guys.

I was concerned about the overdose because it would have amounted to over five times the recommended dose. Thanks for laying that to rest.

The car has been towed to a shop. Let's see what they say...

If your friend had actually kept up with the maintenance and addressed problems as the came, that car would still be running.

To loose that much transmission fluid, he had to be leaving a puddle and he did not notice that?

No way the Lucas caused the failure.

No way would I consider a 30k oci as keeping up with the maintenance. Look at it this way, in one sentence you state OCIs of 3 to 5k miles, but in the next sentence you state one interval being 30k miles. The car has only 130,000 miles on it, so nearly 25% of that mileage was done on ONE OCI. Leaking transmission, if the engine failed, leaking transmission fluid has nothing to do with it.

Just got an update. Timing belt broke completely. Guess that answers that.

Man, I feel bad now, stirring up all this for nothing!

I'd love to see inside the head when they open it up...

Can't expect much out of a cheapo car that was barely maintained. Those kind of maintenance habits would leave any car stranded.

Off to the junk yard, time for a new one.

No it could not! I have added an entire 32 or 64 once bottle of UCL to a fuel tank before just to prove a point to someone about fuel additives and lead not being an issue with UCL. UCL did not cause his vechile any damage at all. Nothing you put inthe fuel tank short of liguid nitroglycerine is going to damage that engine!

The mechanic wants to fix it for $1300.

I tried but I could not convince my buddy to ditch the car...

Wow! Guess that's what they mean when they say "exceeding the recommended dosage is not harmful to your vehicle."

my edumacated guess. he used mobil 1 last oci. first run with synthetic, he never checked the oil. mobil 1 cleaned a "false seal" thereby losing all the oil in the crankcase over 8-9k miles. engine ran dry and toasted.

Still friends? I can just see his wife's reaction: "You put something harmful in our tank just so your buddy could have a pretty bottle?! Give me his address! I'm giving him a piece of my mind!"

Could someone tell us if this Daewoo has an interference engine, and what is its recommended tb change interval? Is $1300 a fair price to repair?
