Outlaws Guitarist Freddie Salem Dies at 70: 'Electric Performer and Beloved Musician'

The first professional concert I ever attended. Their opening act was none other than Molly Hatchet (the Danny Joe Brown days). They were life changing and their music is played regularly in my home.
You should enjoy this Outlaws at Rockpalst - Germany 1981. The sound mix is still getting tuned in on the first song. Devil's Road. The rest of the show if I remember , they got the sound dialed in good.

Ah, they certainly picked a gorgeous venue for their first ever appearance - a mere 200 yards from the Rhine river at the open-air amphitheatre in Sankt Goarshausen. Nice!

In 1975 I went with a girlfriend to see Joe Walsh and Barnstorm in concert. Had no idea who or if they had a back up band to play first like things were back then. We some how ended up sitting on the stage in the front. There was a small section they had taped off that was set up to allow about 30 to 40 folks to sit on the edge of the front of the stage. Anyway, I got my face & ears burned off that night. The opening band who I had never knew existed was The Outlaws! They blew Joe Wash off the place. They came back out for (2) encores and the venue had to turn the lights on to get the audience to stop demanding The Outlaws take the stage again. The funny part is I do not even remember the Joe Walsh part of the show. Been an Outlaws fan since then. Wife and I have seen them so many times , plus Hughie playing in Skynyrd for about ten years we lost count of how many shows we have seen. It is a shame how Hughie put the Outlaws back together in 2006 and almost as talented and good as the original band. Poor Hughie died I think less than a full year after they started to tour again... The so called Outlaws band that had been touring and making records since is a poor excuse. There is only one original member running the deal, Henry Paul. I was / am a fan of his country band Blackhawk who he still plays shows with as several Blackhawk members play in both bands with Henry in Outlaws too. I guess no matter the history it is a good type of show to see to get to hear and see music from both bands still played live in small venues. That type of music will be gone soon........

I still have my Marantz SR400 Receiver. Got it hooked up to push thru two Bose 101s and two JBL bookshelf speakers in each corner of my "man cave." Since about 2001 I have aquired many of the albums I used to drive around in my muscle cars playing. Many were first the form of 8 tracks , then cassettes , and now I have lots of them in CD form. Man cave is in tiny office / room in front middle of the house. I can sit at my desk and look thru window at front yard , work on computer and play my ancient music.

Lots of Hatchet / Outlaws / Skynyrd / Atlanta Rhythym Section / Blackberry Smoke / Humble Pie / Moody Blues / Elvin Bishop / Alvin Lee / Rory Gallagher / Santana / Marshal Tucker Band , Quicksilver Messenger Service , The Byrds , CSN&Y and of course THE BAND and lots more from the golden 60s + 70s era. Lots of vintage older country music & newer too from Johnny Cash , Waylon , Nelson , Alan Jackson , G Strait , Kris Krisstoferson , Marty Robbins ...... Likely have close to 100 cds now. My sons laugh when they look around the "man cave." The younger one says "pops , no one keeps all this mess anymore." You are supposed to just download all your music to an Ipod etc..... LoL

I was just thinking about Tom the other day when one of his tunes played on radio, about how he passed (too young) not too long ago. I read the Don Felder book "Heaven and Hell/My life in the Eagles and it has a part about Don's early life in Florida. Growing up he played in a band with Stephen Stills and to earn money he taught guitar lessons. One of his best students he said was a very young Tom Petty.

Some of the old cassettes inside carry cases . Many others in staackable cassette drawers . They're starting to fail from old age . :(
