just bought an older snapper rider today. just like the one in the forest gump movie. it has a bagger. also has a newer replacement 12 hp b&s engine.it picks up leaves incredibly well. just as good as the trac-vac hooked up behind my cub cadet 1650. i'm gonna change the oil tomorrow and put in mobil 1 turbo diesel truck 5W-40 oil in it. now what do ya all think about that?? i've been really impressed the way it protects the old cast iron kohler in my cubby.

As long as the wheel on the rubber friction disk drive system has meat on it and the cabling isn't frayed on the clutch/brake pedal linkage, you're good to go. You also can't beat the trained bear at the circus look you give off when running one too. Wicked cool.

reading this post put a smile on my face--although the secret is out now. IMO these machines are the best in the business at picking up leaves. Also, the bag instead of buckets make them much easier to empty.
I inherited a 1982 machine like yours, only it has the original 8 HP B&S. Burns 4 oz of oil per hour, so to run it, costs more in oil than in gasoline. Previous owner had Alzheimers, and it sat for years. When I got it, it wasn't running. Replaced the coil cause the mice had chewed through it.
HAve a newer Craftsman tractor as well as Toro push mowers, but I keep the Snapper in a corner of the garage just for Fall and Spring clean ups---it's that good.

My parents used to have one of these up until just a couple years ago. Joel makes some good mechanical points there, especially about that friction disc. Not a hard or expensive repair though. This is one of the most fun to work on models, IMO. I remember my dad (a pretty big guy, and very hairy) riding it around the yard... He looked very trained-bearish. Keep a decent HDEO in that engine and you've practically got a mower for life.
