Umm, after the hurricanes of 2005, we here in South Florida had shops with a year long backlog of failed generator engines. Nearly all of them with connecting rods through the side of the block. Most still were full of oil. The common theme was thin, cheap, automotive oil.

Most of these were run 24 hours a day, for weeks. Many of them with proper oil changes.

My generator, with an 11HP Subaru/Robin engine used Mobil 1 15w50 and has well over 1000 hours. It's still in fine condition.

So, yes, they do fail when asked to perform at rated power for days on end. My 2 failed water pumps were also asked to run at full power for weeks on end. That's literally 30 seasons of mowing in a few weeks. Plus, mowers are not always at very high loads.

wow, thats one sucky power grid. Id move. not that I am skeptical or anything....mine is 16 years old and has under 200 hours....the lions share being the storm in 93...

I run Amsoil 4 stroke oil in most/all of my small engines. In my mind its the best one can get. If the engine fails, it was not due to me being cheap on oil. The cost is trivial.
