Hey Guys,

Awesome site you have here. Im trying to take in as much as
possible reading loads of topics, but struggle with some of the
terms and abbreviations thats used. I'll catch up in time tho.

Ok, heres my story...I have a Nissan Sentra N14 model. I
fitted a SR20VE motor to it and Im enjoying it loads. Mods
to the motor at this point in time is only exhaust, intake and
a stand alone engine management system. She makes 156.7Kw and
223Nm and revs out to 7800rpm. Im planning on fitting some N1
cams to her in a few weeks time and it should give another 10-15
whp gain (will rev out to about 8300rpm after cams are fitted)

I live in South Africa and everyday temps range from 22-27 deg
Celsius year round with max temp in summer reaching say 32 deg
and min in winter about 5 deg.

I do gymkhana's and track days with my Sentra and Im planning
on doing more track work next year in a hatch class we have
going at our local track. That would include a full days racing
with practice, qualifying and two heats of about 6 laps each.

I have a nice 10 row Autobahn88 external oil cooler fitted and
a 32mm duel core aluminium radiator that keeps temps down.

Its my daily drive, but I do give it a good hiding more often
that not. I drive hard, but I dont break my car. Also have a
good mix of open road and stop and go driving in my driving
routine.

I also dont keep oil in my car for more that 10 000Km. Usually
I change it at about 8000Km.

Phew, now you know my story...I would like to know what oil
you guys recommend.

I've been running Shell Helix Ultra 10w40 with no problems, but
have always wondered if there is something better out there.
Would love to try Mobile 1, but the 0-40 scares me with our
high temps we get here. The 15w50 Mobil 1 is available, but
very scarce. Im looking into a few Liqui Moly oils and would
like your take on it. Is those additive packages they have
(Mos2 and Ceratec) worth a shot???
We also dont have alot of fancy oils available in SA so I
dont have loads to choose from. If you can think of any, please
post them up and I'll phone around to see if I can source some.

Im very scared to just try anything as my motor is still very
healthy and would NOT want to mess it up.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance.

PS: Sorry for the long post :)

I`d use a good 50 weight. The 15W50 M1 is a good choice. Maybe a racing oil? There`s always Valvoline VR1 and Pennzoil GT. If you want a PAO synthetic, there`s Royal Purple 20W50 and their XPR Racing 51.

The 0w-40 might be slightly thinner than your 10w-40 but the difference will be tiny. Remember that the W rating only represents winter pumpability. When the oil is hot, the big number is what matters and you are talking about going from one xw-40 to another. At operating temps, they will be pretty much the same viscosity.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is one of the best widely available oils in the world. I would not be deterred by a number that only comes into play in temperatures you will never see. :)

Great stuff. Look for something with ACEA A3, BMW LL-01, Mercedes 229.5 or 229.3, or Porsche approval for an oil that has been through more rigorous testing.

It's always best to have the right oil in the first place.

Motul. Look for 8100 X-Max 5w-30/5w-40, or 300V 5w-30/5w-40/10w-40 (8100 is fully synthetic street oil, and 300V is street-ready race oil).

The Shell Helix Ultra is prob the best you will do. d00df00d has some very good off-the-shef- recs to whic I would add FUCHS Silkolene Pro-S ester; I dont think you want or need A PAO based oil in S.A.

Given that you don't freeze, and you don't bake, then a 5W-40 to 15w-40 would probably do the work for you 99 plus % of the time.

Hey Guys,

Thank you so much for all the advice. Its so refreshing to still
get decent advice on the net these days.

I'll check out the oils recommended and compare the availability
and price. I'll make my decision and let you guys know.

Thanx again, its much appreciated.

Cheers

Hey Guys,

Been looking around and Im considering Liqui Moly's Synthoil
Energy 0W-40 or Motul 300V 10W-40. I would prefer the Motul,
but dont know for sure if I can get some.

Would the Motul 300V be good as a street oil seeing as its a
race oil. I do do much more street driving than racing. Then, If
I cant find Motul, whats your take on the Liqui Moly one?

Once again, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

300V is perfectly suitable for street use -- especially the "Chrono" 10w-40, which is designed for endurance races. The only difference is that it might not be able to run as long between changes as a full-blown street oil of similar quality. However, if you are changing your oil between 8k and 10k km, you should be fine. This is probably a great oil for your application. In fact, I'm sure it will be massive overkill.

Liqui Moly Synthoil Energy 0w-40 can't be expected to be as tough as the Motul 300V, being both a street oil and a 0w-40. However, Liqui Moly recommends it for use in some fairly tough street applications (MB 229.3, BMW LL-98, Porsche A40 -- although it doesn't actually carry these approvals). Not a bad fall-back, although I would be inclined to prefer Mobil 1 0w-40 just because it actually carries a lot of approvals and they are tougher ones to boot.

Hey Guys,

Just a update of what I bought and what I think of it.

I ended up taking the Liqui Moly TopTech 4100 5W-40.
It was competitively priced and thought Id give it a go.
First impression was that its very thin from the can and
have to admit, had me worried for a while.

When I started the car for the first time everything looked
good with good oil pressure.

I did a track/gymkhana the weekend and must say, compared the
Shell Helix Ultra the hot oil pressure seems to be better
with the TopTech 4100 (the Helix Ultra was also 5W-40)

Any remarks on the oil I chose??? I really value your input
guys, thanx alot.

Cheers

Cool, good to know.

Yeah oil temps stays between 70 and 90 deg all the time.

The oil cooler I have works a treat.

PS: The oil temp gauge I have is a cheapish one, so I dont take
the temp reading as gospel, I just use it to ref the temp against
normal usage when racing to see if things dont go pear shapped.

Cheers

Ah, okay. I was hoping to know whether the temps were any different with the new oil, but if you can't tell it's no big deal.

Those are nice and low temps for a 5w-40. I'd say you're in good shape with that oil.

You said the oil seems very thin at ambient temp, but seems to be yielding high oil pressures. This means that the oil has a very high viscosity index and flows well when cold while retaining its viscosity when hot. In other words, a good start!

Keep an eye on pressure and temperature over the course of the OCI. If pressure stays high when the temp is high, that means the oil is also shear-stable (i.e. not undergoing permanent viscosity loss), which is VERY good.

If in addition the engine continues to run well and oil analysis comes back favorable, you have a slam-dunk.

Hey dOOdfOOd,

Thanx for your advice, I'll do as you say and give feedback after
I've done some more km's.

What you say makes sense and makes me feel even better about this
oil. Time will tell tho...

Thanx again, man.

Cheers
