Hello and from reading here I havent found a answer to a question. If a person had a modern fuel injected car/truck and they were running something like Rotella T5 10W30 in the vehicle, would any harm be done to that catalytic converter? Wondered this so dont crucify me on this. I still use my pyb 5w30 in my civic. If you had a older car that was carb' with a cat conv, would running the above mentioned HDEO hurt the converter?

If Rotella T5 has SN aproval it should be fine even for 2012-2013 car. But I doubt any new car manual will say use 10w-30. It will be 0w-30 or 5w-30.

Thanks guys and I realize the oil grade thing zyxelenator. Last time I got my PYB 5W30, I stopped and looked at the T5 10W30 Rotella, and it still had the CJ4/SM rating on it. adam

I dont plan to use this oil folks, just asking a "theoretical" question was all. Thank you all for the replies though. adam

The ZDDP in any oil is damaging to O2 sensors and catalytic converters. Rotella has about double the ZDDP as most passenger car motor oils. The amount of ZDDP that hits the O2's and Cats is a function of the amount of oil that gets burnt and the zddp in the oil. So, it could be especially in a car that burns a lot of oil, or it could be no big deal in a car that burns no noticeable amount.

So basically in a good running car, that leaks no oil and uses none, it would be fine to use is what I was asking. I think you meant to say Fraction also not function bepperb adam

Don't think so. "Function" looks right to me.

I dont think that looks right to me or anyone that is literate whatsoever. Anywho, I guess to answer my question, yes it is ok, as unless your car/truck is burning oil, you would be fine to use this Rotella 10w30 oil in a vehicle that has higher miles or older vehicle that specs a 10w30. thanks folks, Adam

I suggest you educate yourself before calling someone illiterate. Start with a 7th grade math book.

Okay, children... Anyway! LOL I wouldn't use T5 in a Civic(not my first choice), for example, at least not in the winter. Perhaps try it in the summer first for a shorter OCI and then proceed to get a UOA to check things out. If you aren't burning much oil out of the exhaust, it shouldn't foul up the cat too quick. Just using your car as the example that is. You might could add some MoS2 for kicks.

Again, I am NOT going to use this in a civic or my civic. Just curious if it would damage a cat converter. My car doesnt use oil or leak oil also. Artbuc, I have a education and I have respect for others. Some people cant spell well is what I was implying so dont go off telling me or anyone to get educated when you dont even know the person. Have a nice life

Well, I was just using your car as the example, I did state that. I too think it's simply a matter of how much oil a car may burn/lose via exhaust, as far as impact of catalytic converter life span, not that it would simply damage it outright. Just 'foul' it more quickly.

Let me state something so everyone here at BITOG can understand. I am not going to use this oil period. I asked if it would harm a cat converter in a modern fuel injected vehicle and or a high mileage older truck or vehicle that is fuel injected. Sorry if some folks here associated this with me using this oil. Sorry about the wording errors also. adam I guess its safe to say if you had a older vehicle say a early 90's chevy p/u that is fuel injected and higher miles, you could use Rotella 10w30 T5 in it.

^Sure, no worries. If the cat goes, it wasn't far from happening anyway. JMO. EDIT: I can also see how I was too loose in using your car as the example, but wanted to treat it as an 'if we used your car' scenario then 'here is what I would do'. thumbsup

Civic. I think by this comment and the multitude of very basic questions you have posed that you are young. Now this is the Internet and it is a very friendly forum as compared to others I am in. If what was written bothers you I believe you wouldn't make it in my Harley forum. Now you chirped at someone for spelling when I reality the poster spelled it correctly, you just didn't understand the statement, then chose to point out a spelling error when in reality it was a comprehension error on your behalf. Then you get butthurt when after you clearly tried to belittle someones spelling, when it was your comprehension that erred, that some in the forum jumped on you. Well kid, some advise. This is the Internet. You need thick skin. And dint let what people write bother you. And before you pose a question try the search function. It's oil bud,not rocket science. The have a nice life comment shows your maturity level, chill out, take a break. In hindsight had you re-read the comment you might have understood what the poster was saying. Then you wouldn't have had to try to belittle a spelling error, that wasn't a spelling error. You kinda did this to yourself. Instead of getting lippy, you should have ignored it and just kept going with your search for answers. Good luck bud
