Vehicle: 02 Ford ZX3 with 164k, Zetec Engine, and 5 speed manual.
I just picked this vehicle up as a beater to get me by reliably until I get a few other car projects completed.
I have no idea how much oil this vehicle consumes between changes. I like Synthetics, but I don't know whether or not the vehicle has leaks yet or burns alot of oil.
I like an extended OCI when possible. I used to go 15k miles with M1 0w-20 on my Escort GT with the Mazda BP engine without problems or buring more than a quart of oil in 15k miles.
I just don't know about doing that with the Zetec though...don't know much about it or if it is as reliable, more reliable, or less reliable than the Mazda BP.
The vehicle will be driven 130 miles round trip 4 days per week on the highway. The highways are usually clear, but sometimes it can take 3.5 hours to go just 65 miles on the highway due to heavy congestion.
When I am done with the vehicle in about 4 months, my wife will have learned to drive stick on it. She will be expecting a similar commute with it except we anticipate the commute to be about 120 miles round trip 5 days per week all highway miles. The area that she will be commuting too will be straight highway miles and traffic jams should not be nearly as common as they are for me…however if traffic does happen to jam, it will jam very badly.
I don’t mind sacrificing fuel economy for reliability in my choice of oil. I would prefer a Synthetic oil just to give me a bit of a break with OCI intervals since I have so many other cars that I have to maintain.
However, I’d like to keep the OCI conservative since my wife will driving it not me. I have a spare ZX3 of the same year where I can play the opposite game…(best fuel efficient oil and pushing OCIs).
I have done some searching hear and it looks like the engine is very picky about the oil filter type? Anyone know anything about that?
Sorry for the long post, I figure the more specifics about the commute and my goals the more you can assist.
Thank you.

I ran M1 5-or-0w-20 for 10k miles in my '03. Basically the same engine but the '03 had a little power tweak. Use a Motorcraft filter (FL-400s I believe) and don't even worry about it with all those highway miles.

Great motor. Amazing efficiency in that car. I got much better than EPA. Fuelly

I don't see why it would have a problem running 10K or more for an OCI. A little port injected engine on the highway. Can't think of a more ideal situation for oil.

I believe those have timing belts, might want to get that changed if it has not been.

Also, put in the Ford XT-Q5-MS fluid. It will make the Focus shift better than a brand new car.

I ran 5w-30 Mobile 1 in 2 ZX2 Zetecs for 7500 and never had an issue.

The 03 didn't have any power tweak, they just changed the rating numbers for some reason. Ford has never really been known for accuracy on their Zetec ratings they advertised the 03 ZX3 with the same power numbers as the Focus, but really nothing had changed.

Pick any syn you can find on sale then monitor the engine closely to determine if there is a consumption issue.
Any of the majors syns will be more than good enough to run 10000 mile intervals on a highway driven vehicle.

Personally I'd run a short interval with a cheap conventional and a can of seafoam or mmo in the oil,and pour a can into a vacuum line to splash clean the intake, valves and pistons.
Then I'd run whichever syn was on sale when I changed the oil and never think about it again.

I have always insisted that you all are the best and I do mean it. Thank you very much for your thoughts and time here.

That Fuelly link is for a ZX-2. I have a ZX-3. The ZX-2 was a better platform for fuel efficiency, better coefficient of drag .31 vs. .36 and is lighter. I think that the ZX-2 makes better power than the ZX-3 as well.

I just happen to have a spare ZX-3 with a good motor laying around, so I got a ZX-3 instead. I also feel that the ZX-3 might be a bit safer due to size.

Funny, I had to keep correcting myself in my initial post. I kept saying ZX-2, because half of me wanted one anyways lol.

We have this very car. Ours is of the '01 MY.
I bought it to use as a winter beater.
We bought it with only 88K and the oil looked so clean that I didn't change it until 89.5K.
After another 4K on the Maxlife 5W-30 I put in it, the oil still looks really clean on a paper towel used to wipe the dipstick and consumption is nil.
The upper cylinder head looks nice and clean through the fill hole.
This seems like an engine well suited to a synthetic and long drains.
Establish whether you have consumption or leak problems before springing for a synthetic, but if niether exists, then I'd say that 10K on any syn for the driving conditions you intend to use the in car would work well.

Actually the ZX2 made a couple less HP and less TQ, but had VCT on the exhaust so it's midrange was stronger than the Focus, weighed 100lbs less, and had a 4.10 final gear.

The VCT made it more picky on oil as well as the VCT was controlled by oil pressure.

Side note I slid doing 30 into the rear of a pickup that was topped in the rain. Hood crumpled and the Rad support bent, but Hood/hood latch from a junkyard, headlight, and pulling the brace out a bit to straighten it and the car was back in the road a few days later. I miss those cars. If they made one today with the 1.6 EcoBoost or the 2.0 I'd buy one with no question. I had 125whp, ran low 15's and got 42MPG HW. Was great for back then. I was 5-0 @ the local street races vs other non-FI compacts. I can talk Zetec and Zetec tuning all day long.

Thanks all M1 EP is starting to sound like a sure bet. I appreciate your experiences and the education on the VCT as well.

That 4.10 final drive is essentially the same as the G Series used in my Escort GT. You can swap that 5th gear out with a .717 fifth gear...did that on the Escort. Unfortunately no economical option exists for the 5th gear with the MTX-75 used in the focus. You can get a European/Diesel 5th gear...but that is more than I am willing to spend.
