Oil Life Monitor vs. Dealer Recommended Oil Change

JSRT4,

I would check and see if the filter used by the dealer is suited for a long OCI.

I recently had a Firestone store do an oil change with full synthetic and they used a filter good for 5000 miles / 8000 Km.

It's the chance of varnish I'd be worried about. I'm afraid of varnish like some guys are afraid of 10W-30.

Well, we used 10w-30, and varnish was pretty minimal, given the much lower quality of the oils of the day. I can't see anyone getting varnish on a 10,000 km interval on Pennzoil Platinum. If SE and SF conventionals didn't, I wouldn't worry much about PP in SN/GF-5.

Good ole' Merk afraid of a lil' varnish. Doesn't he know that it's harmless? LOL! I wonder how long he would run synthetic blend UNION 76 10w30?

Both are about as bogus as modern day Quaker State or Pennzoil causing sludge...

I just changed the oil on my Pentastar at 10% on the OLM which was about 5800 miles this time; it came out dark amber! This was a dealer oil change so it was probably Pennzoil YB 5w20 that I was draining out. I refilled with Pennzoil Platnum and I fully intend to run it down to 0% this time.

My dealer keeps slapping the come back in 3k stickers on my windshield which I remove.

Dealers are interested in lots of services to make money. I trust the engineers that designed my vehicle. I trust them enough to drive it on the highway with other people in it, so I'll trust the OLM and go by it.

At 150k when I trade it in I'm not going to get extra money for the truck if I did 10 extra oil changes. No one cares.

5,000 Km = only ~ 3,000 miles. That is a crazy oil recommendation for a modern engine, unless trailer pulling in the mountains. Go with the OLM. Ed

Thanks for all of the added replies, and thanks for keeping the discussion civil

To the dealer's credit I see the oil tech guy doing my change through a window in the waiting room, he pours the oil out of 1 litre bottles. He walks through the waiting room with a box of 6 oil bottles and a filter. The filters are Mopar standard issue.

The dealer has a big Penzoil Ultra display in the waiting area, they only run that brand of oil now and they aren't using bulk oil, it comes out of bottles/cases. I don't mind the price if I can stretch out the miles and I want to keep dealer oil changes until the warranty runs out. I can do the changes myself later down the road.

Where did anyone say they were afraid of 10W-30? As a matter of fact my F150 has 10W-30 in it right now (that I got on sale at Kmart a while back.) 5W-30 would be my first choice - but here in southern ca. either works perfectly fine!

For the record, I didn't see or feel any difference whatsoever in performance or noise between the 5W-30 and the 10W-30 oil. The MPG of the F150 is not that good on either oil! LOL!

Anybody who's reluctant to use 10W-30 in their 0W-20/5W-20 specified car is afraid of 10W-30. They will never tell you why they won't use 10W-30 other than to say that it's not the recommended grade in their owners manual. I'm left to wonder what's really going on in their imagination.

They will not use 10w30 cause they know that 0w20 and 5w20 or either is specified. NOT a 10w30, especially if under WARRANTY

Sure, and then there's that other guy who bought a 2006 Mustang and he's running 0W-20 in Arizona.

And what's wrong with that?

I have to wonder about the "fear" of "thin oil." My MGM has had 5W-20 most of it's life. That is with MANY trips from the San Diego area to Phoenix and back, often in 110 - 115 degree heat. By the thinking of some, my engine should have blown up a long time ago. Granted it's not a Mustang, but it is still a V8 engine pulling 4500 pounds plus whatever weight I have in the car up some very long hills at 75-80+ MPH.

Yet it keeps running extremely well. I wonder why that is? Do you suppose that the engineers at Ford knew what they were doing and ran a few tests before recommending it?

While there is nothing wrong with 10W-30 for those of us who live in a warm climate, there is nothing magical or special about it. I also agree with a previous poster - often some of us who drive cars that are under warranty tend to use what the manufacturer recommends, at least during the warranty period.

What's going to happen?

Please stick to what will happen, not made-up nonsense.

Some companies, like XOM, will back up a 0w-20 in a 5w-20 application. I don't recall them saying use 10w-30 instead.
