Bitog friends,

So i have traded in my '01 VW Lupo GTI for a 60k mile '07 Seat Leon Cupra, amazing car to drive.

Managed to get in contact with the previous owner, who told me that he replaced the engine ( blown because of a broken spark plug ) @ 30k. the replacement engine is from a MK6 GOLF R20, engine code CDL. the R20 engine had 6k miles on it when it was swapped.

The CDL engine has different, stronger Pistons, rods, cams and other components compaired to the normal TFSI 2.0 engines. This engine is also found in the Audi S3, Seat leon Cupra R, Audi TTS, Golf GTI ED35 and Scirocco R.

Engine mods are: Autotech high pressure fuel pump, Full milltek turboback with 3 inch downpipe with 200 cell cat, HG motorsport intake. HG motorsport turbo outlet, BSH revamp PCV blockoff plate, Audi S3 intercooler.

Too bad i found out she uses quite some oil. 1 quart every 800-1000 miles. Going to check some things out friday ( Valve covers known to be faulty ) hopefully it isn't the turbo seals. I don't think it will be the piston rings because the CDL engine has improved pistons without the fauly rings.

Changed the oil out 600 miles ago with Total Quarts 9000 5w40, what i still had left from the lupo.

Want to change out the oil within 2000 miles to give the engine a bit of extra cleaning, but first want to find out the cause of oil usage, will do compression test if i can't find anything.

I have made a list of oils that are approved and i can get fairly cheap, please help me decide! and if you have any tips about the oil consumption, please share them with me.

As explained above, the CDL version of this engine doesn't use oil by default ( updated pistons + rings ), and a quart per 1k miles is way too much.

what would you advise, 504/507 or 502? The Shell 0w30 AV-L seems appealing because it's designed special for that 504/507 specification only

thanks guys, did cam follower with last oil change, old one looked fine but since i got the pump off i placed a new one anyway

Known oil burners and sludgers those engines. Id just use the cheapest oil going. At the rate its using oil it will have done a full oil change before you need to do an oil change.

I would look for an engine code or serial that confirms the engine is what you were told...

It does have the engine code stamped on it. that's why i contacted the previous owner, i bought it from a car trader and weeks later i found out about the engine code, wanted to know why ect. so contacted the previous owner via facebook, his name and adress was on invoices that were in the car.

in that case I'd go with the Aral or castrol in 0w-40 form if you can find it. no doubt easy to find online. the ester/PAO formulation will help clean up the ring pack, but you'll need several fairly short oil runs for that. If the problem is ring sticking, of course...

Thanks, was thinking about 0w40 myself too, can get a bit cold sometimes here.

Will shell helix ultra 0w40 do the trick? Much better price for me and better available.

Will add a can of Liqui Moly motor oil saver if i can't find the cause of consumption.

no I doubt dhell will do it. Not a bad oil, but it's entirely dependant on dispersants to give the oil solubility.

If you're in The Netherlands, another oil to consider is Gulf Formula G 0w-30, it's also an ester containing oil. Note that any other viscosity grade of that oil isn't! Esters, and group I minerals will give the highest solubility to remove any crud in the ring pack. Do a couple short oil runs, change the oil as it gets dark. I wouldn't change the filter for that though, just a drain and fill. If that works and oil consumption goes down, you can switch to shell helix ultra.

Don't put in any other additives just yet.

Going in the workshop tomorrow to check some things out, will do compression test if i can't find problems in the PCV system, turbo or valve cover. Piston rings are no common problem for this specific engine code, unlike other tfsi's, but it can ofcourse be possible.

well, I'm not saying they're bad, as then the oil wouldn't help. But with enough miles on long drain intervals any engine becomes susceptible to stuck oil control rings, and a turbo engine more so. in any event, the engine hasn't got enough miles on it to be worn, and a leaky turbo always shows with a smokey exhaust, in my experience.

So i opened her up today, valve cover was cracked inside, so it was probably sucking oil in from the cracks. Ordered a new cover, should be in tomorrow..

Nice and clean cams, looks like the cover has been loosened before, there was liquid seal everywhere. Cleaned that up nicely and will seal the new cover with a new, original gasket.

hope it will reduce the consumption, car is going for a remap end of this month, will be changing the thermostat friday, stays just under the 90 degree celcius mark ( also a common issue for TFSI engines )

Fixed the thermostat today. [censored] of a job, took me about 4 hours, alternator and intake had to go off to reach the stat.. but we did id. Nice to have some new coolant in also.

Before the needle would stay just before 90 degree celsius, and Torque OBD readout says 74 real degrees celcius with dropping temps when ipressing clutch in..

Now the temp goes straight to 87 degrees and stay there no matter what. Needle exaclty @ 90
