Hey gang,

Its time to get rid of the 94 Swift GT, though it is still running strong after 4K miles after breaking the timing belt and developing a "tick". The Rotella-T Syn 5w-40 worked well for that.

Time for the new one- 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo 2.0L KKK 26 with fresh REBUILT engine and NEW turbo. I was thinking Mobil 1 0w-40 or GC. Thoughts? This will be daily-driven and occasionally autocrossed.

Thanks,

JamesW

Hi,
solo2driver- you may like to search the UOA area on here for "Porsche 928......" for details of Delvac 1 used in my 928 S4
This link will also be of some assistance;

http://www.landsharkoz.com/techtips.htm

Check under "Lubricants for the 928"

The 924's engine family (VW-Audi derived) is very well suited to Mobil's Delvac 1 5w-40 (also sold in NA as M1 SUV 5w-40). Drew99GT has suggested this too

Porsche specify a minimum HTHS of 3.5cSt and "Porsche Approval" covers viscosity maintenance for an extended cycle, anti foaming control, oxidation control and etc. Delvac 1 5w-40 exceeds these requirements and is excellent in deposit control in the ring belt and turbocharger areas

Doug

Hi Jelly,
thanks for the comment

The "lubricants" topic will be updated soon - the document has been prepared but will firstly be released to 928 owners in OZ as part of a "New Owners" Technical Manual

Update--

*possibly* a:
1982 Porsche 924 Turbo S with the M471 Package and Club Sport widebody (but no cage, and sunroof and leather....all factory Porsche paint and bodywork, so it is not one of those aftermarket conversions).

This car is killing me, I CANNOT find info on one like it, all the pics and specs on the 924 Turbo do not match, but the VIN and year are 924 Turbo. Koni adjustables, sunroof, sound, stainless exhaust piping, but it has the 944 wide body. It is NOT a 924 Carrera GT, and that rear panels look different than a 924 GTS.

Anyway, good, the M1 5w-40 sounds like a good bet. I will use it with the Mahle filters. I hope to take delivery of the car this week, work permitting. Unfortunately the paint is in poor condition on the nose and one fender, and I will be repainting it as best I can afford.

Any more info or tips on this car would be great!

Oh-- and it has 60K miles. No rips in leather seats or dash, but the interior is that retarded tan, and it smells like crayons in the car hehe. Serviced by Monaco Motors (Ferrari and Porsche) since new, I will track down their number and location. California car.

Hi,
Solo2driver - at the expense of offending the Moderators on here who do not seem to appreciate my posts (that is why I rarely post here) I recommend that you join the "RENNLIST" board who are Porsche specialists. They are NOT into being oil specialists so no negaitive crossover with BITOG

Regards
Doug

Why would that offend us Doug? Your post has nothing wrong with it. We don't mind people posting links to other message boards at all. We just frown upon links to people selling oil products (that aren't sponsors) but that is understandable since we need to respect our sponsor's wishes.

I wish you would join us more often Doug, your posts are always very helpful and informative!

Rick.
PS, any testing of the Fuchs Titan Ultra MC 1040 in the fleet yet ?

I have 3 pictures that may interest y'all regarding the 924 Turbo S-

1) Shot down oil fill cap
2) shot down oil fill cap (better)
3) Heavily finned crankcase oil pan!!

I don't have a place to host them, each are about 0.5MB. Any help? Thanks!

Hi,
Rick - no, I have not done any testing with FUCHS lubricants in my trucks yet. Their QLD manager addressed the Porsche Owners group in Brisbane on Tuesday and apparently made a generalistaion that their GT1 0w-20 A1/B1 oil can be used in all models! It does not even have Porsche Approval and is simply unsuitable in some engines. These people - sometimes they do themselves more harm than good!!!

The million kms tear down inspection on one engine (D1) was a truely enlightening expose' for many at Detroit Diesel considering these engines are prone to specific wear areas and sludging

Solo2driver - if you cannot post the photos on here please send them to me privately

Regards
Doug

Solo2Driver, If you need a program to resize your pictures, go here to Irfan View
The download is free.
A good place to host your piccies is image cave

Doug, I can't really imagine how an old air cooled flat 6 would take to a 0W-20 oil.

I used some Titan Ultralube 15w-40 for one change in the Landy, but the consumption was a little higher than with D1, although that is a little unfair on the oil, as being a typical Landy, it tends to mark its territory.

(a couple of dodgy crimps on the oil cooler lines)
It's D1 all round in this household these days.

Very rare car. Rare to the point of what the heck is it? My first response was going to be 924 Turbo GTS but I assume that your comment on it not being a 924 Carrera GT or GTS excludes that.

Porsche made about 150 of the GTS I think. As you seem to imply, these cars did not actually have the true 944 body, but did have modified fender flares to accomodate wider tires for racing. That body style served as the basis for the 944 design. Model year is potentially a little misleading as typical 1982 here often means a 1981 model in Germany. While the 944 came out as an 83 model here it was an 82 in Europe.

I have seen a few 924 bodies that were refitted with the Porsche 2.5L 4cyl to replace the Audi 2L 4cyl of the 924, but never the reverse.

On to your actual question, I think the Mobil1 is a good choice, particularly if this is a newly rebuilt engine. My experience is with two later model 944S and 944 S2 cars with high mileage. The first had been run on Dino all its life and loved the change to Mobil 1. The second claimed to have a recent rebuild of the 3.0L 4cyl which turned out to not actually be true. I re-did the top end but it eats oil and realllly reallly ate Mobil1 when I tried to use it (in a summer grade 15w40). I am currently doing a Clean with Auto-RX and Agip Dino oil.

Mobil 1 0W40 is probably good for your area. Others with more knowledge can comment on the specifics of the grade. In my more extreme climate I tend to want/need a change for winter/summer to cover the range of routine temperatures here in Canada.

The Mahle filters are good. Watch out for some aftermarket cheapo filters that have insufficient drainage. If you are not changing oil/filter yourself be very specific with mechanics on filter.

Hi,
Solo2driver - Porsche's M471 Sport 1 Group Option package contained;

16" flats
Rear spoiler
Front air dam
Bilstein shocks
Manual sport seats
3-spoke steering wheel
No side mouldings (rub strips)

As well, the brakes were likely to be ventilated and followed the 944 updates to the 924 specification. Rollbars were likely increased in diameter too to match the 944 spec

Yup, that's the one...looks good too. It's been a few months in the making to get ahold of the car, too many delays, but looks like just a few weeks away. Mobil SUV 5w-40 it is, folks. Thanks!
