Oil For New Bike

Just picked up a 2015 GSX-R1000 that will be replacing my 2012 GSX-R1000 track bike.

I am in the process of converting it to a track bike.

I plan on running conventional oil for a while before I switch to Amsoil.

Any recommendations on a conventional oil that will do the job and hold up well.

901 I have had good luck breaking in on conventional and switching to syn after.

I am sure it would be fine either way, just set in my ways.

That shoul be fine. Or, plain ol' Rotella 15w-40.
 
I would (and do) use Rotella for the first couple fills. I prefer to dump the first couple early, and Rotella makes that much less expensive.
 
I found that the shifting became notchy in less than 1k miles on my Suzuki, when using Rotella 15w40. But lots of people seem to use it without complaint.

I just took delivery of a '15 S1000RR. I'll run the factory fill until the first service, let the Dealer do the first service with their branded oil, and remove the early rev-limiter. Then on the next change I'll probably go with Motul 300V 4T, which has performed the best IMO, in my Suzuki.
 
I use a modified motoman break in, works well for me, so stick with it.

I also do several extra oil/filter changes at specific intervals while under 1000 miles using conventional oil.

Based on UOA's I am running Amsoil 20W-50 exclusively for synthetic.
 
I used yamalube the first 2 OCI's but I had an r6. Its good oil though especially if only for 2,000 miles or less. I switched to Amsoil at around 3,000 though.

I agree, 10/40 or if your manual agrees 20/50 Valvoline Conventional Motorcycle oil, if your a syn person you can get the syn also.
Cost $4 (Walmart) to $5 a quart for the conventional, good solid oil, good UOAs. Really dont have to over think it using Valvoline oils.

Also Rotella 15/40 is great, better a 15/40 then a 10/40 if you cant use 20/50

The choice is yours, but I don't think Suzuki went to the
trouble to extract all the available power from 999cc
just to lose 6 HP in unnecessary oil drag... choosing a
30 over a 50 is smarter because it will:

1)increase HP at the rear wheel
2)quicken the throttle response coming out of the corners...
3)decrease over all operating temps...
4)increase the oil flow at the critical bearings...

Any one of 30 grade 100% synthetic motorcycle specific oils will meet and exceed both your racing and mileage expectations...

Larry, how does more oil flow to the bearings protect, when the thinner oil actually provides a lower oil film thickness in the bearings ?

Whether you run a 30 or a 50 it won't protect the bearings
unless the oil is flowing and the more oil flow the
better protection especially in a high rpm engine such as the
OPs Gixxer 1000... a 30wt flows more oil at higher rpms which
flows more oil between the critical bearings which carries away
more heat and you're not wasting RWHP pumping oil through the
blow off valve...

Use the recommended viscosity the engineers call for in regards to operating temp. If Suzuki says it needs a 40 weight when the bike is up to temp, run a 40 weight.

The engineers who worked to get all that power out of the engine know it well...and know what it needs to strike a balance between protection and performance.
