My G/f has a 93 celica that has close to 300,000 miles. It's be fairly well maintained but in the past year has become an very large oil consumer. As the temperature gets hotter it is starting to use about 1 qt per week. The car isn't really worth repairing since she is planning to have enough money at the end of the summer to buy a newer car. Also it has a good bit of front end damage from an encounter with a deer on the interstate.

My question is what would be a good oil to use to squeeze the last bit of life out of the vehicle? I considered AutoRX, but the cost of it vs. oil was not worth it for the short period of time. I believe it would produce interesting results butto cure the oil buring problem the engine would likely need a rebuilt. Just about everything is original except for the normal tuneup items I install.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You can get your oil for free. If you know anyone who changes there own oil ask them for there used oil and keep topping the old clunker off with used oil. Why put money into an engine that is on its last legs if the body on the car is also a question mark.

I agree, top it off with whatever is cheap.

I was once in this situation and Castrol 20W-50 by far stayed with the engine the best. 10W-40 Valvoline and others vanished quickly.

Yes 20w-50 is the weight. Family dollar store has the weight with an off brand called American. I believe .89 per quart. This is what I would use. It has the SL rating.

I'm with DOC! Its not worth spending alot on oil in a car that's on its way out. See whats on sale at Walmart.

There have been several positive comments on oil burning being drastically reduced using Castrol High Mileage oils! I have also personally witnessed it. And certainly, use a 10W-40 or 20W-50 for it. How many miles are driven in the week of time it uses 1 qt?

In warm weather use straight SAE 40. That is what I used to drastically reduce the oil smoke from and old Toyota Supra to the point that it actually passed a smog check.

SAE 30 in winter and SAE 40 in summer, the blowby and smoke will be reduced and consumption a bit less, I see "Dollar Tree" stores now have Citgo oil at $1 a quart and it's even sf/sg rated vs some of the SA "cheapies" you ofen see at other liquidators....

Seriously, I think your car has some issues beyond what oil can do. I would not waste any money on High Mileage Oil as it still will fall out of motor that loses a quart/week (although how many miles in a week??).

SuperTech oil at Walmart is your best bet. A decent oil at a superior price, $0.84/QT here and bit cheaper in the 5QT jugs I believe.

Although a pain, $0.84/week is not much money especially in lieu of products etc that won't fix a broken/worn out motor.

I had great success with Castrol High Mileage Oil in my 88 Lincoln Town Car winter beater. This car burned or leaked a lot of oil, Castrol HM cut consumption back 50-75%, huge noticeable difference. I highly recommend it. I was using 10w-30, but it comes in various weights. It works exactly as advertised.

Typically the vehicle gets about 600 miles a week. Her job requires her to drive from many different places so it gets a pretty hard use. I don't think it is burning an absurd amount of oil for an engine that has 300k of all hard driven city miles. Currently it usually gets a 10-40 of either valvoline or what is on sale. It will prolly get a 20w-50 for the summer. I would submit my waste oil but it is GC and I'm not pulling that out of my truck for another 4000 miles.

Supertech in the 5qt jug looks to be one of the best deals. I can plop the container in the trunk and refill weekly. The only bad thing is adding oil is a 2 person job due to a busted hood latch on the front. I wish I could have at least gotten some jerky from that stupid deer.

Castrol HM 20w50 is the thickest 20w50 out there according to this board.

You could try Valvoline in the straight 50w racing oil.

I'd grab some API rated 20W-50. If it still doesnt work out, put some Motor Honey in. That stuff seriously worked in my sisters ol smoke blowing Mazda.
