I have a military surplus MEP-831A diesel generator with a new engine under 10 hrs. I'm trying to decide which oil to use in it. It runs an air cooled Yanmar L70AE engine and takes about 1 1/2 qts. I was thinking Rotella but was curious if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks.

Here's the manual for it.......

Here's the oil spec page......

Service specs

API spec CC is obsolete. I use the latest API spec CK4 15W40 in all my stationary/offroad applications. Have never experienced a single oil rated failure using 15W40 Rotella T even when 10W30 was spec'd. These air cooled run really hot when working hard in the heat. Air cooled also has looser tolerances which benefit from 15W40 IMHO.

They are calling for 10W30, CC (ancient obsolete rating). I know my gasoline OPE engines seem to like T5 10W30 & Delo 400 30 & 10W30-think I would use 10W30 in cold weather & possibly straight 30 or 15W40 in summer. Hard to believe a military engine couldn't use any decent HDEO.

Yeah, they are only about 7HP... it's a small, air-cooled diesel
