I have an 89 mustang with 136000 kilometers. I have always run casrtol gtx 10w30 or syntec 10w30. Is this good for the car? I want to know what the best oil for this car is. thanks in advance.

It looks like you are using very good oils. As for the best I's guess either Mobil 1 or Amsoil 10W30 changed every 5000 to 6000 miles.

Are you using more than 1 quart of of oil between oil changes? If not then stick with the 10w30. If the car is run in the winter I would suggest 5w30 for winter only for cold start protection and back to the 10w30 for warmer months.

A 10W-30 synthetic oil will be fine for use all year however a 5W-30 synthetic oil will work even better in the winter time. I would not suggest using a conventional 10W-30 motor oil in Canada during the winter.

The best motor oils that are fairly easy to find in North America are in my humble opinion (starting with the best):
1) Amsoil
2) Mobil 1
3) Castrol Syntec

I'd use 15W40 HDEO in the summer on that engine.

We don't have a very big selection of 15w40s up here in Canada though.

I'm switching my 5.0L to German Castrol as soon as I'm done with the A/Rx rinse. I think heavy 40 weights or any of the 15W or 20W oils may not be the best idea given the hydraulic lifters and the fact that mine runs lots of oil pressure even when using M1 5W-30...

We are on the same page! I am currently running the last of my Pennz 10W-30 supply as an Rx rinse. 1500 miles to go, and then the GC goes into my 302.

Funny. We also picked the same oil for the Auto/Rx.

I was looking for a synthetic heavy 30 weight or light 40 weight to use in mine after the rinse and since I already have GC around that I use in my Toyota it made sense to use it...

The Owner's Manual for an 89 CrownVic calls for 10W30 at temperatures regularly above 0F, and 5W30 at temperatures regularly below 0F. It shows the 5W30 OK up to 60F.

Ford issued a TSB recommending 5W-30 for all temperatures for many vehicles dating back to 1989, and among them was the 1989 Mustang with the 5.0

If I find the TSB I'll post a link to it.

5W-30 was recommended at the time for my 5.0L Mustang when I bought it new in 1990...

My dad put 160000 miles on his ~'90 F150 with 5.0. No engine problems - didn't use oil - leaked some. 4wd Farm truck/towed/pulled often. Pennzoil (usually) 5w-30.
