oil for 3cfm vacuum pump

hi,

Im running a 3cfm vacuum pump in my laboratory for filtration purposes. It works great, but I can tell that the dino ND vacuum pump oil is vaporizing a bit when it gets hot and Im pulling 30 in Hg on the gauge...

Is there a decent vac pump oil (preferably synthetic) that is reccomended? Is compressor oil the same thing?

you need a staight run oil in other words not a blend of light and heavy oils.

Hit button to soon a PAO would have a lower vapour pressure than a mineral oil blend, most vaccum pump oils are as I said straight run try as heavier vis a ISO 100 or so that may help or look up in the lab supply houses vaccum pump oil.

Our AC vacuum pump uses Mineral oil. The old R12 oil. I tried Pag and Ester once and it foams real bad.

Inland TW should work fine. Or go top shelf with Fomblin or Kyrtox. They're going to cost though.

You might also want to open the ballast valve for an hour or so if the pump has one. What's the actual problem? Back streaming? I assume this is a rotary vane pump? No way they'll do better than a few millitorr and then only if they're two stage. 30 inches? Not on this planet, not even with a cyro pump

Thanks all! THere is a schaeffer's product that looks good for this duty... I just want good life without all the oil vapor smell in the lab...

ouch ! the moisture levels in a PAG or POE refrig oil would be horrific in a short time in a vacuum pump application. Ever drained the oil out of a compressor that has been open to the atmosphere ? It can look like a heavy ale due to moisture loading.

I used to use Suniso 4GS in a pinch when I was short of vac pump oil (IRRC the vac pump oil was an ISO 68 fluid) but it was changed out ASAP (usually after one use) due to concern about moisture.

what type of vacuum pump is it? a liquid ring type is going to use a different type then a piston pump, which is different then a scroll pump...

Back in my lab days (I was a chemist in a former life), we stocked 2 types of vac pump oil: Fomblin, and no-name stuff our stockroom purchased in 55 gal drums.

Pumps in critical applications (or attached to high-dollar equipment) got Fomblin. Everything else got the bulk oil.

This is a rotary vane pump, yes? If so, then absolutely stick with oil spec'd for vacuum pumps. Your pump's seals will thank you.

If you're having a misting problem, then you need to install an oil-mist eliminator on the exhaust port (about $100 from a vacuum supply house), or alternatively run a hose from the exhaust port to a fume hood. In one of our labs with a pump that ran 24/7 in a fixed location, we run a 1-inch-diameter piece of PVC up the wall, through the ceiling tile, and tied it into the fume hood exhaust duct. We then just ran a short 3-ft hose from the pump to the PVC.

the oil in my J/B Industries FastVac DV-200N 7cfm 2 stage
Vacuum Pump, could a guy use Amsoil's ISO compressor oil?

i do not want to mess this very pricy pump up so i want the right
oil..

JB just specs their oil as "highly refined mineral oil that should be changed after each use for optimum life."
my guess is that it is nothing special and amsoil would work great.

I would call some local A/C supply houses and ask what compressor oils they carry.

You'll probably find a few that carry Robinair vacuum pump oil. I've used it in my Welch Direct Drive that I use on automotive A/C systems and it works fine, so long as you change it at fairly short intervals.

I have some specs for the Robinair 13204 somewhere on my computer if you want them.
