Is it just me, but the wrenches that have the little dimples or small round circles poking out on the filter ring seem to slip more than ones without the dimples? I thought these dimples were supossed to help with the slip and grab the oil filter better, but lately I've found just the opposite. Has any body else found this to be true?

An undimpled strap wrench with a little sand or grit in there, just enough to bite into the paint of the filter, seems to work best for me too.
The dimples on the supertech ST16 seemed to kick the cap off when using one of the cap wrenches with the knurls that supposedly interface with the filter. Hammer it on, and you've got the filter off, but now a real seperation problem.

I've twisted a bunch of metal strap wrenches like soda cans. What works well is an Alltrade ABS plastic strap wrench with rubberized handle and a strong rubber strap. They come in a set of three in three sizes for about $12. The longest wrench offers very good leverage. The smaller ones are useful for opening pickle jars -- if ya can't manage due to old age or arthritis.
I have an old steel strapwrench type filter wrench that I use for removal and tightening. I use the smooth type so that I don't damage the filter when I tighten it. Don't have enough strength in my hand to tighten the filter 3/4 turn anymore.
I am glad I finally discovered the 16'' Channellocks I use for hundreds of other things works better than most oil filter wrenches.
For more years than I care to admit I've used end cap oil filter wrenches.
