I have a 2005 Nissan Altima- 3.5. I'm confused about the filter. Wix part # is 51365, Purolator says either 14610 or 14612 and Fram is 7317. The Wix filter is much shorter than the others. Which should I use. Thanks

You'll notice that some 7317's, like the ProSelect and SuperTech are shorter than the 14610 as well. Wix does make one as long as the 14610, I don't know the number off the top of my head.

Let me see if I can do better. For 20 x 1.5mm threads, 14 psi by-pass valve, anti-drain back valve, 2.3" O.D. gasket 2.5" to 3.5" long.

about 2.5 inches long.

NAPA Gold 1365
Purolator L14612
STP S-02876

Just a heads up.. If you tell the people you have a VQ30 (2000 Maxima for example) it is a larger filter, which fits the 3.5.

I know this because my father has a 2k Maxima, and I had an 02 Altima 3.5. The filters were smaller on the 3.5 for some reason. I always used the VQ30's filters on my VQ35. I can't recall part numbers, but I used to just say I need a filter for a 2000 Maxima.

I guess my question is, Can I use either the short or the taller version, will either one be OK? Do I still use 4.5 quarts with either filter.

Doesn't the VQ35DE engine take 5 qts (and not 4.5)? I believe mine in the 2004 Infiniti G35 takes 5 qts. The filter size makes negligible difference in the amount of oil.

Use the longer filter on the 3.5 ... it fits just fine. I don't know why Nissan calls out the long filter for the 2.5L (4 cyl) and the short filter for the 3.5L (6 cyl).

See this thread of mine. All those filters listed are the long versions, and will work on the VQ35 just fine.

These are the only filters I'd consider using on my '04 3.5 Altima - All are the "long version" of the filter:

1356 NAPA GOLD
3323 ROBERT BOSCH
51356 WIX
B1402 BALDWIN FILTERS
FL822 MOTORCRAFT
L14610 PUROLATOR
PL14610 PUROLATOR

Use any of the longer filters I listed. If you wanted my short list, it would actually look like Superbusa's with maybe the M1 filter added.

My list ARE the longer filters that apply to the 3.5L Altimas. They are all 3.3 to 3.6 inches long, which IS the longest you'll find for this engine.

Very nice and extensive list bepperb, impressive. I don't know how you cataloged that list but it's fairly kool.

To the OP, depending on your OCI and budget any of the filters Busa posted will work. I'm currently running a recently installed $1.45 Advance Auto Total Grip (Purolator) on my 03 Altima 2.5 SL. It's quite similar to the Purolator Prem Plus(classic) and Powerflo filter sold at Advance (commercial acct.)

For me, I'd look for the best value among Busa's choices, but that's just how I buy. The most for the least.

And, I would say that the Super Tech #7317, not on the list, is also a very decent oil filter. Metal endcaps and center tube, with blue button adbv, for those that don't care for ecore.

I been using Napa Gold 1356 on my 07 Altima. It's a great filter. I like the thick gasket compared to the thin Purolator ones.

The Nissan OEM filters for the Altimas are small, expensive and built like a FRAM (cardboard end caps, Made in China). No thanks!

... much better filters out there for 1/2 the price.

I'm running the NAPA Gold 1356 (longer than the 1365 which it calls for) on my '04 Altima V6 now, and will be trying the Purolator PL14610 next oil change. I think either one is a great filter ... especially the PL1460 which cost me a whopping $2.25 from Amazon after Purolator rebate.

+1 There's a comparison thread with pictures here somewhere. I was looking at the Nissan very recently and was thinking how similar it was to the Honda A-02 filter, only it looked smaller/shorter.

One thing I found out about filters for the VQ35 is to make sure there is at least 5~6 mm between the filter gasket surface plane and the top of the filter base where the threads are. This is to ensure the filter base doesn't bottom out on the filter mount tube on the engine when installed. The base of the filter should look concaved down below the gasket plane for adequate clearance.

This is probably true for most cars, but something to watch out for.
