Pictures of filter internals can give us some idea of the quality of the manufacture of a filter and this is a good start but it seems to be somewhat like buying stereo speakers out of a catalog because they look good.
The pictures can't tell us how good the filtering is.
Over at the UOA area, the posts concern oil type and brand. There does not seem to be an interest in what brand filter contributed to the insolubles number.

Is there any info along these lines? I think that would be a good indication of the real world performance of the various brand filters.

The truth about oil filters is available for us to find. Bob's flow analysis is a great start. I guess we need to do some particle counts for various filter.

I did review all the uoa on PUREONE filters and all were very low insolubles. However I have nocticed the AMSOIL UOA have the lowest insolubles and not sure if this is the oil or the filters. Could even be the company that does most of the test on AMSOIL. It is important that everyone who gives a UOA give us the filter used as well as the lab.

Many of the filter makers will give you the filtration efficiency if you ask. You want to know the efficiency for absolute (98.5%), 50%, maybe 75%. This will give you size of particle removed if the filter could only remove 50%, or 98.5%, etc. For example, Champ Labs told me that the Mobil 1 filter that they make has an efficiency of 20 microns absolute and 10 microns @ 75%.

The filter maker may also be able to give the flow rate through the filter with 180°F 30 wt. oil (that seems to be a standard) before the bypass valve opens...and can always give you the bypass valve setting. Again, for the Mobil 1 filter, 2.5 psid max @ 3 gpm flow.

If you are on an extended drain and change only the filter, then notice the oil start to clean up...then that's a good filter! So far the factory AC Delco is doing it for me.
