An ill fitting air filter or poor quality filter media can suck in all kinds of contaminants that will cause wear.

Incoming air is chock full of dirt of all sizes which needs to be removed. In contrast, engine oil in a modern engine in good condition has relatively little contamination to deal with in the first place. John
