If I switch from conventional oils (10W-30) to Mobil Extended Performance (5w30), what performance changes might I expect? Oil pressure, RPM, gas mileage? I have a 1995 Chevrolet C1500 5.7L at 274,000 miles. Thanks

It is difficult to answer this question without knowing more about your vehicle. Has it been maintained properly, and does it still provide good control of oil consumption? In what kind of service is the vehicle used? Has the engine been modified or been rebuilt? Are there any external leaks? If I assume the engine has been well maintained, has not been modified or rebuilt, and does not have any external leaks, then I would say switching to a 5w30 from 10w30 may yield some fuel economy benefits over the long haul. In other words, do not expect a huge improvement in fuel economy over your first few tankfuls.I would also not be surprised that at least initially you experience an increase in oil usage for a few changes. This is normal and occurs when you change the brand or type of oil you are using. This would be especially true since you are changing viscosity grades. I would also expect your oil pressure to be lower and your RPM may be a little higher. If your vehicle is used in tough service or experiencing the signs of age, you may want to consider using a higher viscosity oil or an oil specifically designed for higher mileage vehicles like new Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 or 10W-40.

I agree with the bold print. I've had this occur in transition from one oil to another. It took about 10k to retreat back to zero consumption.

what would be the point in switching at 274,000 miles? Stick with what works and it's been working for that many miles.

Can't say I ever noticed increased oil consumption from switching between brands. But then, I have switched between brands quite a bit and maybe that explains the consumption I do have.

But what would be the mechanism by which switching oil causes increased consumption?

I believe the increased oil usage phenomenon with M1 is what Mickey M referred to as "seating".

I assumed what he was referring to was either ring sticking or valve stem seal weeping due to the chemical action of the changeover to new additives.

Ironically the only time I've noticed increased consumption is when I first switch over or back to Mobil 1. But it stabilizes eventually and then no more comsumption. Weird, "ain't" it

Blue99 is correct. Mickey mentioned that awhile back. It's called seating. When you switch brands, it's good to stay with it for awhile. The guys from Elf told me this as well. It can take up to 5k miles for things to stabilize.

As someone who has used a different oil (both in Syn, Blend or conventional) and brand each time for 2.5 years and 70k+ miles, I have not noticed any difference in the amount of oil useage other than when I used Mobil 1.

My Corolla engine is known to use a little durning high speed /RPM use.

Its been the same for the last 50k miles. No matter what I use now.

The used oil analysis are close to the same no matter what brand/type I use.

Take care, bill

I just switched the wifes toyota v6 from 5w30 valvoline ac to 5w30 valvoline maxlife syn blend. Do you think I will experience some oil consumption?

I have a GM 5.7L Tahoe which ran 3K OCI with GTX 5-10W30. It consumed zero oil in 3K OCI's. Mileage at that time was about 120K.

I switched to 5W30 Syntec. Oil dropped 1/3 qt in under 1000 miles, then another 1/3 qt in subsequent 5000 miles.

Oddly the next run of 5W30 Syntec did not drop initially but still consumed 2/3qt over 6000 miles. I believe a subsequent run did the same thing (would need to check records).

Sounds like measurement error but I was watching closely because of the change to synth.
