If a car develops engine problems while under warranty, how would GM[for example] determine which brand of oil you have in the car? Lets assume there was sufficient oil in the engine to begin with. I doubt if most car owners keep all their receipts of oil purchased if they change their own oil or even if they have it changed at a jiffy lube. Does a new car warranty state you have to keep all receiptes of oil purchased?

As I understand it you must prove that the required maintenance has been done. That's where the receipts come into play.

The engine maker probably could determine the brand of oil through complex lab analysis, and probably wouldn't bother. Anyway, the brand means nothing to your warranty claim. All that counts is that you used a product with the right specs and used it at the right time. In any case, when you bring the engine in for a warranty repair, and the oil looks right, the question of oil and maintenance and records usually isn't asked. If the oil looks unusual or very dirty or some other red flag, then, yes, the question might be asked and the owner put on the spot. Or, if the owner has an irrepressible urge to shoot his mouth off about using 5W-20 oil in a diesel to gain .5% more fuel mileage, or something else dumb like that...guess what?
