Oil blotter test........How?

I did a search and was interested in finding out how to do an Oil Blotter Test, and what exactly am I looking for? I have a general idea but didn't see it spelled out. Sorry if its been posted already, I just didn't find the answers I was looking for.

If you try it, let it run for at least a month, and see what pattern develops over the long term. I ended up with the spot having a very sharp, dark outer edge, as if the oil had stopped moving at that point, but new oil kept feeding into the area, carrying dark material with it. Maybe the oil beomes oxidized after a while, and can soak no further.
