On 26May at 71,649M, I changed out my oil with the usual, Royal Purple 10W-30. I usually run RP for 4000M but after Patman convinced me to switch to GC, I decided to do an oil change much sooner than usual. On 23June (less than a month later) at only 73,028M (1,379M OCI) when I drained out the RP, I noticed that the oil was extremely black. Is this normal for an LS1 with 73K M or is it time to use a product like Auto-RX to cleanout carbon, sludge, etc?

To find out if there is carbon in the oil, take the dipstick and let a drop of warm oil drip onto a white business card. Put it aside for a day or two and then look at it. If there is carbon in the oil, there will be a halo in the spot in the card.

Just becuase the oil is black does not meam a lot. Did you place some it a clear container and see if it was translucent? Additives will turn oil dark when they are working.
