This may have been bantered around already, but does anybody know for sure what the level / range of zinc / phosphorus was in your off the shelf name brand oils 30 to 40 years ago?
 
why does it matter??? It may not be the exact same chemistry, show the same stability or performance... and other adds that take its place may do equally well.

It may be one thing to compare to an API SJ or SL oil, another to compare to way outdated technology...
 
Back then, perhaps 12-1400 PPM Zinc. Not sure about phosphorous. JHZ is right though. Unless you have a car that old with an engine on the original build, what's it matter?
 
If you want I can give you my buddies number and arrange to do an oil analysis on his all original 69 corvette. He is a real fram filter pig he better check his vette for swine,I wouldn't put fram on a bicycle.
