Office Chair Explosions?

This was on my youtube feed this morning for no reason and quite frankly has me quite concerned. Never would have imagined this. I have 2 office chairs from the early 2000s that I use daily. Is this cause for concern? They were purchased brand new from sams club and one from office max. Both from china.

Also have an old 1998 that was from work that was thrown away. Grabbed it because it was hardly used.

To borrow a phrase from David St. Hubbins: "Dozens of office chairs explode each year; it's just not widely reported".

In the early 90s I witnessed an office chair catastrophe. This was a higher than normal office chair (a stool really) that was used primarily at drafting tables. What I remember is a guy was sitting in the chair at his drafting table, and when he stood up the piston in the seat tube shot straight up and went through the ceiling tile. Nobody was injured.

I did not intend this to be a joking type of thread. Never heard of this before this morning, and it does indeed have me nervous now.

So this DOES happen and its just not reported much?

Why would there need to be THAT much pressure in the cylinder?

A case rupture is going to be rather rare, I should think. Seals first, then maybe an ejection (joke sorta intended) like @wavinwayne

I think this is more of the normal case.

In my personal experience, I've had chairs that would slowly lower during the day so I'd have to readjust to the correct height. If that happens then I don't see enough pressure building for the chair to explode/erupt.

Perfectly timed thread. My $600 leather office/computer chair, made on a frame of Chinese steel, just failed catastrophically. Both steel links failed with a snap and I went flying over backwards.

We had this happen on all our Porsche office chairs in the very early 2000s, bought at a few $k a piece. T'was the dot com bubble and money was flowing in the office, just before we closed.

It was also in Europe, not sure whether Porsche Design office chairs ever made it to the US.

Also, they were just fancy office chairs, not the ones that look like Porsche car seats

A thorough pre-sit inspection would likely have found cracks before it completely failed.

Was there laughing from others?
I remember about 12 years ago me and a buddy were playing a game online (wow maybe? guildwars?)
and he liked to rock abit in the office chair.. .. the flimsy stamped base fatigued then ripped and over backwards he went.

Got the chair for people believing in fearmongering social feeds:

Height adjustable, lacks lumbar support & tilt, in fact you'll break them by tilting them. Comfortable for about an hour of sitting.
