Although I'm relatively new here, I've been participating in Automotive boards for quite a while, and have done huge amounts of reading on lubricants for cars and my job as a mechanical manufacturing engineer.

This oil stuff is just getting me too nutty . . . and I think I'm in good company. Can anybody spell Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Time for a break before I lose it completely. It's been fun.

I've read through all this stuff many times. I'm due an oil change this weekend. I have no idea what I'm going to use. One one hand this does that, but has a lower this than the other, however the other has a higher that than this. I'm considering just taking back to Honda and let them use the oil they formulated for the engine.

I've learned a lot by perusing these pages. You can learn a lot by reading between the lines too. My best advice to a BITOG peruser/addict is "consider the source" before taking someone's comments to the bank. If they cannot back up what they say with credible links to their sources, and/or valid UOA's, I would bring along a grain of salt to go with their commentaries. When someone appears to be an advocate of a particular oil, or a particular ritual--look closer. Sometimes there will be no conflicts of interest, but other times there are.

Too, some of these guys tend to forget what they said umpteen hundred posts ago. When you're trying to decide whose advice is really worth considering--check the archives to see if there are any obvious blunders in consistency.

In the last year I've been a member here, I've gone from:

Any old oil will work. If the filter is too hard to get to to change, don't worry about it. When the oil is low, put in a quart of whatever is available (and I got 160K miles out of my '93 Escort with just that philosophy--and it's still running strong at near 180K today!).

To...

Gotta be synthetic. Cleaner engine, longer time between oil changes, probably Mobil 1 is the best. Money well spent, yessirree! No dino crap for me. No way no how...

To...

UOA's don't lie. Dinos rule. Change your oil using a good dino and you'll get more life out of the engine than you'll ever hope to--provided the engine is properly designed in the first place. Dollar-a-quart oils often turn in better numbers than 5 dollar a quart oils. I've learned that!

So it's been good... ****, I love this place. (Aside from the fact that they won't let me say ****!)

JavaMan - don't feel like the lone ranger.

Do you have loyalty to one brand of oil? Okay, that's a good one. Just use 1 quart of 15w-40 or straight 40 mixed with your favorite 5w-30 or 10w-30 and you'll be mid-way between thin and thick.

Most important thing is to make a committment and stick to it. That's it.

Java ManI agree with jorton...that being said unless u "race" your car everyday as long as u continue to maintain your car just change it with a brand name GF-4 oil and quality filter and you will get tired of the car b4 it breaks down.
