Slow day today, I changed the hydraulic oil on our new in January 3 tonne rated trolley jack [Urrea made in Spain, it's 48 inches long; apparently they don't lie about the load ratings like the Chinese do]. Used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. It calls for HL or HM hydraulic oil 30 cSt @ 40 °C. Lubed the pivot points with Roshfrans Dexron ii. Lubed the lift journal with Roshfrans NLGI #3 Graphite Fortified Lithium Grease. Where the cylinder contacts the journal it looked like it was binding a little and just beginning to gall, apparently they didn't lubricate it at the factory. I plan to change the fluid once a year, probably with Mobil AW 32 once I buy a bucket to change the Rotary Lifts out with.

It's a floor jack. It needs it's joints lubed but changing the hydraulic oil? I don't know man, I've always been under the impression it's fine to just replace the oil every decade or so when replacing the seals as PM.

Hence the "OCD" part.

It wasn't a small investment [$465.00 US] and it gets used daily in a two bay tire shop. It replaced a Chinese made Mikel's 4 tonne rated that lasted 2-1/2 years and cost about $200.00. The last year and a half of use the Chinese jack leaked profusely. I wonder how long it would have went without leaking if I had changed out the cooking oil they put in it from the factory when it was new. The owner's manual for the new Spanish jack says to change the fluid "periodically". It would probably be less OCD to change it within the 1st year, then every 2 or 3 years afterwards. I was bored though and had a third of a quart left over from a customer's transmission and put it to use.

My big investment is a Napa "Lincoln" floor jack. I bought it about 12 years ago for 300. I have a Sears jack I bought in about 1985 that's made in Japan. Go figure that one.

Don't remember what it cost though. If you use it a fair amount in a shop 2 or 3 years seems reasonable.
