I’m going to be getting a new to me 96 Dodge Ram CTD from out west, and want to start thinking about MTLs. My reading is that a special synthetic lube was designed to play nicely with the CF synchros in this MT (I guess the non-HD model and others have brass synchros?).

Ive read anecdotal evidence that the wrong lube will “tear up” the synchros. Not really a mention of yellow metals, rather the synchros. The fluid that was designed for these was repackaged Castrol Syntorq 75W85 GL4.

So, is there other evidence of the fluid damaging synchronizer materials? I guess the coefficient of friction could be wrong…. I think that Chrysler found that ATF+4 was a suitable if less viscous alternative. It seems like one of the Amsoil MT fluids is suitable.

Does anyone know if 75w-85 GL-4 fluids that are not compatible?

Saw that. I’m kind of curious how much it really matters though. Ive heard of synchros being “torn up” in short order. Not yellow metal damage or what not. CF synchros.
