I assume optimal oil temp range for 40wt oil in sporty cars is 90-100C. Is this corect?

So then 80-90 is considered extreme condition?

Seems odd that most thermostatic oil products(thermostatic ****ches and oil diverters etc...) have 80C functions to open oil to coolers etc...

That seems to cold to me. Probably more to it though.

Hi,
all engines will vary but a good indictation of where engine builders aim is as follows;

Porsche 32vDOHC V8 (Coolant cooled)

Oil intercooler thermostat opens at 87C and is believed fully open at 93C
Measurements (over two years) at an ambient range of -3C to 43C and always after a minimum of 30mins engine time provided this;

Average - 77C (in sump 85C +/-3C)
High - 90C (in sump below 93C +/-3C)
Median - 77C (in sump 85C +/-3C)
There was a 3C variance between a 15w-50 and 5w-40 synthetics with the 5w-40 running hottest

Detroit Diesel(DD) 24v SOHC 12.7 litre 500hp

Engine ECM programmed to issue an oil temp warning @115C and to power down (progressive shut off) @121C using a 15w-40 mineral HDEO.
Measurements taken in an ambient range of -5C to 46C and always after a minimum of 120mins engine time (and using Delvac 1 5w-40) provided this;

Average - 103C
High - 112C
Low - 95C

The DD oil shut down temp corresponds with Porsche's two staged ECM warning programme @ 118C and 120C

I like synthetic oils to operate in the 90-110C range for maximum durability and performance

I hope this is of interest

Regards
Doug

Most aftermarket thermostats open @ 180F ...Permacool, Mocol, etc.

Anywhere 212 +/- 20F is apparently considered acceptable for continuous temp. My oil temp appears to run around 160F in cooler weather. We'll see what summer brings.

A track car will have oil prewarmed to 90c to 115c expected race temp and up to 150c for qualifying.
