Even though Lubro Moly Voll Synthese 5W-40 does not have the 503.01 spec on the bottle, could I still use it in my 1.8T? It does have the usual 500 and 502 spec on the bottle.I was just curious about this "new" VW spec for their oil. Is it just for their long drain intervals or is it just turbo specific?

The Lubro Moly labels are probably 6 months behind since there shipped over here. I would think a German oil company would have the latest VW specs. I would send Lubro Moly (Liqui Moly) in Germany an email.

VW 503.01 is a VW LongLife Service spec, and there would be absolutely no good reason to use that oil unless the vehicle is eqipped for LongLife service (WIV). All US 1.8T Audi and VW motors require VW 502.00. VW 502.00 is by no means worse than VW 503.01.

Well, the car definately feels different with this 5W-40 Lubro Moly Voll Synthese. It seems almost sluggish. I was running GC green and I thinking about trying the GC gold, any thoughts? So, I should use 503.01 oils in my turbo app?

Brian,

These engines perform the best with the 0w-30/5w-30/10w-30 grades....

I see NO reason to use a 5w-40 oil in this application instead of a VW 502/505 rated or VW 503.01 rated xw-30, even if you live in Death Valley, CA.

VW/Audi recommends an SAE 5w-40 simply to make their recommendation as idiot proof as possible. If you read some of the oil related posts on the "VW Vortex", you'll understand ...

At the very least, most any 5w-40 will meet the generic ACEA A3/B3 specs, if not VW 502.00/505.00....It's much harder to find xw-30 grades that are of high enough quality to meet the VW/Audi specs.

If you plan on 5K changes, the oil is fine to use. Like someone said, the spec is for long OCIs...which I don't recommend on a turbo 4 cylinder.

I agree; by specifying 5W-40, VAG is ensuring that their engines will get a synthetic product and thereby ostensibly curtailing the 1.8T sludge issue. I've used synthetic Havoline and/or M1 5W30 for the last 40K on my '98 A4, averaging 5K OCI. no problems at all, including track days & Auto-crossing in 95F Summer heat.

VW 503.00
This is a relatively new oil specification for petrol engines with variable
service intervals. It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, or the TT and S3
with outputs of more than 180bhp.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 503.01
A new oil specification specifically for the RS4, and the TT and S3 with outputs
of more than 180bhp, Passat W8 and Phaeton W12.
Viscosity rating: 0w-30/40 ,HT/HS>3.5

sorry to disagree with you guys but, IMHO, i think the VAG 1.8T 20 Valve engines do like a 5w-40 oil. Although my 2K Golf 4-dr 1.8T has had a steady diet for the last 30K miles out of 50K, it seemed to be the most quiet on BC 5w-40 and M1 5w-40. Even Shell Rotella T syn 5w-40 helped it to audibly run more quietly.

However, my UOA's of GC have been too good to switch. Esp. when I can go 6K miles on an interval.

brainpavlovic, how often do you change your oil?
what year/make/model is this 1.8t?

I see no problem using ANY full synthetic oil with the biggest filter that fits with a SANE OCI!

Does this engine have the oil/antifreeze heat exchanger?
If it doesn't, will one fit?
If it does, can a larger oil cooler off of any other VW/Audi engines work? I'm thinking dieselgeek oil cooler upgrade!
