True, even Ford says it's not really needed, because if it really was, they would say so to the owner's of all Fords.
It's just something the Ford engineers decided to do to ensure no crud collected in the dome end of their base up mounted filters got swept into the motor during a bypass event. Personally, I wouldn't want a base mounted bypass on a dome up mounted filter, like what's on my Tacoma.
