I have one nearly identical to that on my Coleman generator with over 400 hours on it. Mounted it on the gas tank with Goop adhesive.

how does the hour meter work? where does it get power?

The hour meter has a battery in it that you cannot replace they are sealed. Mine still works after about ten years. They have a vibration sensor that detects when the engine is running. It is completely self contained no wires.

The meter has a small wire that wraps around the spark plug lead, and is clipped into the bottom of the unit.
It picks up spark pulses and increments in 1/10 hours.
