NK - 'wipe US off the map'

don't forget Mr. Chavez wants to get nuclear capability with RUSSIA's help . I believe this is why he's taking control of many businesses , industries . Wonder if the meeting they had awhile ago with NORTH KOREA and IRAN was a plan to bring us down , possibly with economics ( blackmail ) .

North Korea's threats are empty. They serve two purposes:

1. To get attention and aid from the international community
2. To bolster their domestic propaganda, which is the only thing keeping the country together.

They have no real ability to pose a threat to us. If they did, we would have heard about it explicitly. For now, all we hear about is the various components being tested, and the possibility that those could be assembled into a weapon. A completed and functioning weapon is a different ballgame, and they do not have the wherewithal to keep that kind of thing a secret for long.

Moreover, if you really think about it, you'll see that it is not in their best interest to do anything damaging to us or our allies. In fact, it is also in their best interest to keep their nukes AWAY from our enemies. Why would they harm their biggest potential source of aid and leverage in the international community? If they take any real hostile action whatsoever, or allow a warhead to fall into the wrong hands, they will be flattened without a second thought. The leadership of North Korea know this full well. People who are in power want to stay in power, and it's hard to be in power when everyone's dead.

They threaten and bluster and kick and scream, and they have just enough technology and programs to cause a scare. This gets them what they want. Why would they want to risk more?

Exactly. It's a show. If he didn't have nukes, he'd be ignored or flattened. We can do that to a country of that size in 2 weeks. TWO WEEKS until his military was degraded to ineffective status.

Now any apparent appeasement is a simple matter of avoided costs. His temper tantrums upset the herds too much ..so you buy him off to shut up. China's in bed with us now, and also suffers under the background noise that he creates.

Conventionally. Nukes are never an option unless you've just written off the future.

Edit: You do have to wonder what the present day world would be like if MacArthur had gotten his wish.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "ineffective."

If you mean utterly destroying their ability to fight at all, then two weeks isn't a bad guess IMO.

If you mean air superiority and the destruction of their major communications and supply lines, then it'd be days at most.

Yeah..airports/airfields...power plants ...harbors ..rail ...bridges...most of that will be in constant repair for a day or two until they run out of the resources to deal with it.

No matter how you shake it up ..it's a short time span for destroying a conventional military. That's why nations seek nukes. It trumps that a good bit and ups the ante. Until that point, who cares what they think or like ..or don't?

You can fett in their jenerale~ direcion~

Maybe George should of paid more attention to North Korea instead of Iraq.

It's an empty threat. And China, the Hair's only ally, is openly airing worries about its isolated neighbor. Not much on the surface, but something it's never done before.

Haven't read about NK's proliferation of nuclear material and technology? You think Iran is able to enrich uranium on their own?

God help us. I'm starting to fear that we are in the same spot in history circa 1930. The world is arming itself to the teeth, we're trying to disarm ourselves, and we have people with their heads in the sand who don't think anything of it.

WWII got us out of the last depression...

Send the women and children out of the country. (Send the women over 18 here).

Then let's take care of that piece of real estate and give it back to the Koreans.

I love the wheels on that missile mobile.

You think nuclear technology in the hands of terrorists or rogue countries isn't a threat?

They have a very real ability to threaten us: by selling weapons technology abroad to our enemies. It's their entire economy!

They've already sold nuclear technology to Iran and Syria, along with missiles and missile technology. All that stuff then ends up in the hands of Hamas, Hezbola, and Al Queda.

The Taliban (well, the lower ranks anyway) are the only ones that don't seem to care if they die as a side effect of doing harm to the U.S. Any of our other enemies have far too much of a self-preservationist attitude to pick a nuclear fight with us. Neither side would be the victor in that situation...they strike, we strike back, and NK would cease to exist. If that's what they really want, they're of course free to push the button. I just pray their COMPLETELY INSANE leader realizes what's headed his way if he does. The next major world war won't be anything like the previous ones. Ask Japan how they think it would shake out for Korea. I think they still remember.

Speculation here but there's probably a world of difference between the guts of Harry Truman and the guts of .......nevermind, don't want to lock this.
