Anybody know if any standard power steering fluid would do or I really need the Nissan one? I know Honda/Acura is different. Is it better to use Honda/Acura specific or the generic?

Amsoil lookup resulted in the Amsoil ATF being suggested for use as a power steering lubricant in your vehicle. This leads me to believe that any that any ATF that meets or exceeds AF3 specifications is suitable for use in your vehicle's power steering system.

The FSM recommends Dexron III or equivalent for use in your Maxima's P/S reservoir. Use any high quality ATF that meets the spec and you'll be good.

I don't think Nissan PSF II is anything special. I'm running M1 ATF in my Pathfinder's P/S system and it's fine.

Every Nissan I ever saw from that era stated to use Dexron ATF on the power steering reservoir.

Buy some synthetic ATF that either meets Dexron III or Dexron VI, and it will improve steering feel and reduce noise compared to conventional ATF.
