Ouch.. Latest Nissan news, Nissan is asking their suppliers for a pause on payments so they can free up cash for themselves. And Renault just took an 11 Billion, yes that's Billion with a B loss on their partnership with Nissan. here's the links that talk about both..

No doubt Nissan has financial problems. But the headlines are as usual quite exaggerated.

The $11B is a one time write down on Nissan shares Renault owns - which have been down literally for years. They finally decided to take the loss on their books, after years of decline. Was likely a bad quarter for them - or they needed a distraction anyway.

As for the suppliers - Nissan is asking suppliers to take a higher payment at a later date. So there asking there suppliers to provide credit essentially. I wouldn't take the deal, but maybe some will - who knows all the parts manufacturers are likely hurting due to the low vehicle sales volume this year to date.

So its really all old news - Nissan has cash flow problems.

The Nissan dealer here closed last month. It was a bummer because I knew people that had been there a very long time.
Ditto, ours closed VERY abruptly. She was using vehicles as loan collateral but a surprise inspection by the lender revealed she'd sold something like 60 of those vehicles and not paid back the agreed-upon amount from each sale.

Wonder if the millions of failed cvt transmissions had anything to do with this?

The older Nissans were nothing fancy but generally decent cars.
Well that certainly would not hurt - but they could get by that, with a quality transmission of course.

The big issue is Ghosn loaded them with debt to build capacity to build 7M vehicles / year globally when Nissan had traditionally sold half that. Then, when the numbers didn't match production they used gimmicks and cost cutting to attempt to move cars, which can work very shot term but there now seeing long term results.

This is why the Japanese want Renault out. But it may be too little too late.

The brand isn't going anywhere, but they may need some sort of bankruptcy to shed all that overhead that they don't need and can't pay for. Maybe they will follow GM and be the next Japanese Government Motors.

I really doubt that the Japanese will allow Nissan to go extinct.
This was the reason that Honda was being encouraged to take on Nissan as a junior partner, which Nissan objected to.
One way or another, Nissan will survive and hopefully prosper, very much as GM went from the bottom of the industry in reputation and credit worthiness to a once again respectable if much smaller player.

There is a street here that had Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. Some group bought Toyota and Honda, then finally put the squeeze on Nissan. All sorts of rumors about what will go in there. We only caught wind of it because they sent us notification to make sure there was no outstanding charges on their their account.

What does Nissan stand for? Like, what will the average consumer associate Nissan with (except Altima energy, which is really not anything positive)?

ATM, cheap retail prices.
You can actually buy a brand new Altima SV for less than 25K.
I thought about it seriously, but then had a change in plans.

So, nothing.
There is no anything that draws customers except low prices which than raises suspicion.

10 years ago if you wanted Toyota reliability without the Toyota tax and were willing to give up a few niceties, you bought a Nissan.

In some parts of the world they still do well. The Sentra is popular in less developed countries that wanted a basic car - most sold with a manual. China used to be a huge market for them - which is one of the big issues - China is domesticating their auto industry. The Navara, which we have never really gotten here let alone a diesel one, are one or two in a lot of countries for light duty trucks.

In the USA whomever was in charge here better have been fired twice. They spent way too much money chasing both the big truck market - doubling down with the Titan XD Cummins thing which was also a flop, and in splitting their product line to sell Infiniti - a brand really only ever marketed in the USA - in Japan and elsewhere those same cars are still Nissan, and sold for a more comparable price not the attempt to make it to BMW price tags for those cars :ROFLMAO: . So basically they completely abandoned there traditional customer base -people that wanted to go from A to B and not think very hard about doing it.

So yes, its an excellent question.

I was specifically talking US. I drove a lot Patrol when I worked for NATO. I know Nissan has different image elsewhere, like any other brand. But US? I really don’t know what could people associate Nissan with. New Armada (which I think it is very well executed vehicle, will see about long term reliability) supposed to come as Patrol. It was perfect time to bring that name and cut association with Armada name. Patrol among enthusiasts means something. Others would catch up fast.
Just an example.

Their best cars were the 240Z and the original Infiniti Q45. Both in the distant past.
The Nissans I really liked were are sold here as Datsuns - the 1000, the 510, the B210, and the 240Z, and the 620 Sport Truck.

I guess I'm showing my age.
The Datsun PU with the 1600 4 banger... 100K trouble free miles except for the drum brakes.

Yes, well its global problems.

Management here were idiots. Must have been Ghosn yes men. They chased the full size truck market and pooched it, they chased the mini van market and pooched it. They never imported the actual sporty cars - they turned them into detuned junk. I want a skyline, not a Q whatever - yes more BMW naming wannabe. I want a Patrol not armada. In the meantime they turned there primary cars into unreliable junk.

So yes, I agree with you.
