Nice little home network setup

Putting this together for a client tonight for installation on Friday.

Router: Cisco 1921 (Adv-sec)
Switch: Cisco 2960-S 24-port Gigabit w/PoE
WiFi AP: Cisco Aironet AP1042N

Just finished setting up the router and am starting on the switch

I've been doing their business computer stuff for the better part of a decade. They are revamping their home entertainment setup and part of this is a greater degree of media integration (they have touch-screen controls in each room for audio, lighting, HVAC...etc) and so this was the agreed upon network upgrade to go along with that.

I'm pretty happy with the component selection and I think performance is going to be more than adequate.

At this point 20Mbit cable. But Cogeco is rolling out 50Mbit, so they'll likely be getting that upgrade once it is available in their neighbourhood.

We had 2960s in our smaller offices (<20); we have 3560s now (for advanced configurations), but the performance was quite OK with the 2960s. For what I assume to be <5, the setup you have will never see a blip; the weakest link will be the WAN connection.

I have a business-grade gigabit switch at home as well, but I only paid $40 for it on eBay.

Yeah, I have 3560's in our bigger buildings where routing at the switch level becomes relevant. But with any sort of basic config where all you are leveraging are VLAN's and QoS, a layer 2 switch is more than adequate. As is the case here. Setup will have at most 3x VLAN's most likely and there won't be an inter-VLAN routing going on.

I run a 2960 at home as well with my multi-VLAN config, but it is an older non Gig-E model (only has Gig-E on 2x ports). I'm considering getting an NFR for a WS-C2960S-24TS-S, which is a non-PoE Gig-E model and reasonably priced.

It's an old 3Com 2816, non-managed. Nothing crazy.

Bought it used back in 2009.
