Picking up new X-Trail this weekend, Japanese built QR25DE engine with no Cat problems etc. as my totaled 03 Altima had.

Here is my plan, I am going to run dealership dino oil for 1500 kms or 1000 miles, drain oil and change filter and go to XD3 0-30 100% POA synthetic oil to the 5,000 kms or 3000 miles on odometer, that will be a 3500 km OCI on the first syn oil change. I will then do even 5k kms or 3000 mile OCI on schedule after that.

My Nissan service manager will disagree with me, he will suggest I get at least 40K kms or 25K miles on dino oil OCIs before switching to syn oil. I stubbornly now refuse to do that, want syn oil asap in that engine.

I have heard many people post in BITOG here that they drain the dino at 1K and get that syn oil in immediately and have no problem with their Nissans' rings etc. seating in. Guess I am looking for futher reasurance.

Does my oil OCI plan look good for this QR25DE?

I also plan to do as many highway miles possible with varied speeds and very gentle braking and acceleration for first 12K to 15K kms. Does this sound right, any other advice on driving this X-Trail in early K's of this vehicle?

thanks,
Cyprs

Meant to say in last paragragh above 1.2K Miles or 1.5K kms rather than 12K and 15K.

When I had my new motor replaced in my Spec with a new Japanese built 2.5 ... I ran 1,500km on the dino. Then went to a Castrol Syntec Blend for 5,000km. I then ended up with 5W30 Mobil 1 which I ran for 9,000km.
For curiosity sake, in about 2,000-2,500km I am going to run Mobil 1 0w40 for 12,000km and do a UOA. I know it sounds like too thick an oil, but I've seen good UOA's on it. Getting off topic here....

I say put in the syn after 6,000km have passed.

Hello Luv2drive, totaled off that 03 Altima with those cat problems, lucky to be alive, thank God each day.

This X-Trail has a 100% Japanese QR25DE too, I did a lot of homework on this engine after that 03.

I now have 500kms on engine on dealership dino, I am going to go another 200Kms on this oil, then drop the oil and filter and opt to 5-30 XD3 dino oil for another 800Kms to = the 1500Kms or 1000 miles. I am going to run the XD3 0-30 100% POA syn oil after the 1500km point. I chose the XD3 dino because it is a high detergent HDEO as is the XD3 syn, I figure in layman reasoning this 800kms dino XD3 mini OCI will greatly clean up the engine crud and prepare the engine for the XD3 syn HDEO.

I ran this 0-30 XD3 in the 03 Altima, it ran great, it is a heavy duty 0-30, I bet it is same as the 0-40 in Mobil. XD3 is made by Mobil/Esso/Imperial. Olympic did a 10K OCI analysis on this 0-30 on his Toyota engine, passed with flying colours.

The TBN on 0-30 XD3 is 12.2, Visc at 100C is 12.1, the pour point is -60F or -48C. On 0-40 TBN is 12.2, visc AT 100C is 15.7, pour point same. Compare this XD3 to 5-30 or 10-30 in dino or syn oil in SL rating only and XD3 out specs them in heat and cold start flow. This XD3 is CH-4/SL, my Nissan dealer is impressed with this oil year round and our climate here can reach 44C in summer, -44C in winter.

The XD3 0-30 is $3.71 litre, 0-40 is $4.20. I have entertained idea of throwingin one litre 0-40 with 3 0-30 at peak heat season.

Anyway, I got side tracked, think my idea of XD3 dino 800kms OCI good Idea prior to Syn? (I want dino for the 1500 kms for seating in purpose) I am going little more distance than Molakule's advice in changing oil with his suggested filter prior to syn, mostly because add pack in XD3 dino is same as XD3 syn, sort of prewash or flush I guess with dino XD3.

If you have time Luv2drive, how did you break your 25 in with driving technique?

I am doing the following for my newest 04 Vibe:

3500km on the factory fill
switch to XD3 and go another 3500km
followed by 2 6500km OCI to take it to 20,000km.

After that I'll be doing 15,000km drains. I just did the third oil change at 13,500km and the car runs great. From the Toyota UOA's I've seen, wear metals have leveled off by 20,000km so my engine should be ready for extended drains. Switching to synthetic right after the factory fill is almost a non-issue these days. Many cars come with it from day 1.

Hey Cyprs,
Yeah, when my dealer found my cat in it's condition, he said I should count my luck stars I didn't go on a road trip to the East coast. It could have been a disaster. Now I'm runnin' on my 04 built motor and loving it. No oil burning issues, and the oil takes longer to discolor now!

I think your oil change idea should work, but I'd extend your second interval to at least 5,000km on such an oil. You will have zero issues with any crap building up with such a good HDEO in there. Just my .02

Break in! Well, I never hit more than 75% throttle to 4,000rpm in the first 500km. Then I did a few runs to up around 5,000rpm, and drove it with a slightly heavy foot, but never beating on it. I found 6,000 a few times but easy on the throttle to get there. After 1,600km, Drive it like I stole it, if I wanted to

.
So, bascially right from the get go, I drove it like I normally would, but refused to really get on it until after break in. You have to get those top rings to seat in the first few hundred km's or they will take forever. Since that, I've had zero issues and it runs like silk!
I'm looking at the X-trail myself. Enjoy!

Mobil 1 SS 0W40 @ 100c is 14.7 or so. TBN??? It pours at -54c though. If it find this too thick, I may try XD-3 0W30.

This X-Trail has the 165 hp version of your QR25DE,170 ft lbs torque. I opted to the auto tranny because my 14 year old son will be driving with learners in 4 months, no five speed for him for a while, first auto tranny I ever owned in 25 years driving experience.

This auto tranny in this X-Trail is basically 4 speed direct drive, no slippage, super smooth, real treat. To my amazement, this X-Trail barely breaks a sweat, I took it for a drive on large rolling hills on #1 Highway for first 500 kms. On level highway it basically idles at 2450 rpm in OD. I passed a semi at 140kms/hr and the tach read 3200 rpm. This thing barely labours with this 4 Cylinder, feels like a six.

On hills, I made a point of kicking down the throttle about 1/4 way to kick in passing gear, the X-Trail easily maintained 75 miles per hour at about 2800-2900 rpm up hills in passing gear. I made point not to lug in OD up hills, I believe that is worse. The redline in this X-Trail is 6500 rpm, I cant see even needing it. I touched to 4000 rpm for about 3 seconds in playing with passing gear to learn it, I am keeping revs down but not babying it.

The All Wheel Drive is great, A CRV will not maintain AWD after 70Kms, if I hit black ice on highway this X-Trail will go into AWD at 120kms per hour in 1/10 second on first tire slippage with the AWD set to "Auto".

This AWD is same system put into Infinity and Murana, not a cheap system.

Anyway, I can go on and on with this X-Tail, I got the X-Trail XE AWD, the wheel covers look excellent, as nice as aluminum alloy in my opinion, the interior begs you to get it dirty, easy clean and safe layout with gauges up in middle, warm coffee in winter in cup holder, cold drink summer, the air and heat vents warm and cool drinks different seasons.

If you want any feedback on anything on this X-Trail in your consideration on the X-Trail let me know L2D.

thanks,
Cyprs
