New way to recycle!

I changed the oil in my Peterbilt last month. It was in there a year but only went 2000 miles. The used oil analysis showed it was still good with lots of TBN left but I just cant leave it in much longer.

So I have 12 gallons of oil I gotta dispose of. Kragen will only take it in the 6qt jug they sell you. They won't take it in the gallon jugs I bought it in.

A-Zones tank is always full. Gotta wait in line 45 mins @ PepBoys to dump it.

So this customer comes in with an old 80's Dodge pickup with a 360(see where this is going?). Wants the AC recharged.

During my 2000 rpm test the engine just doesn't sound right. I shut it down and pull the stick........Nothin.

Look around and in the truck for some oil. None.

Hehe. Thing got a gallon of Rotella 15w40 I drained from my truck! When I drained it I bought 3 new 5 gallon buckets then poured the oil from them back into the gallon jugs.

It's clean.......Not like it's been sitting out in the yard uncovered.

Killed 2 birds here. I disposed of 1 gallon and that old Dodge doesn't know the difference.

LOL!! thats a good one.
Just drain the oil off and pour it back into your fuel tanks.
It will burn off just fine.MANY Fleets used to do this and some still do

I have thought of burning it in there but I'm still a little worried about it damaging the injectors.

You said that you couldn't leave it in there any longer? Why not? This is one of the real reasons for doing a used oil analysis.

Chris - Come on up to Big Bear Lake to do some fishing on a Saturday morning.

Just as a coincidence (wink, wink...), on Saturday mornings (until about 2:00 I thinks...) Berdoo' County Fire collects HazMat FREE at the Public Works yard on Garstin Drive in BBL (wink, wink...).

I've dumped over five gallons at a time and they don't bat an eye.

Find a powerplant that burns heavy fuel oils. Colleges, hospitals, electric plants, larger buildings, and steam plants are worth calling. If they're running #3-6 fuel oils, they should be more then happy taking your old dry oil since it becomes 'free fuel'.
Some of the oil recycling trucks charging the quick lubes and autoparts stores for removing their used oil, simply sell it to the local 'plants' for power production.

UOA isn't an excuse not to maintain a vehicle. Some vehicles have the 'warranty fear' threat and require maintenance for peace of mind.

Pepboys always logs and limits amount of oil being recycled.
AZ's in RI always have recycling tanks full and refuse to take any. I complain to AZ management and local gov't listing them as active oil recycling places, since they never seem to be taking oil.
AZ's in MA will take as much as they can get.
Some of the local garages/quicklubes are the same. They'll take as much as they can or take nothing at all. Makes me wonder if the managers need to shop for a better oil reclaiming truck.

But, like you found out, an easy way to recycle oil is to find someone with an 'oil burner'. Since they were low on oil, you should've charged them for the gallon 'top off'!

I dunno. I just don't feel right knowing that it has been in there over a year.

"IF" dirty oil caused a problem I would be out $10K on a truck worth $4k. I'd rather change it and spend $150 for oil and filters every year.

Do you have to be a Big Bear resident? Hesperia has the same program buy I live in Apple Valley so they turned me away.

UnDummy. It's against the law to burn used oil in Ca.The plants here burn trash and tires though.

I always take all my used motor oil, filters and other waste to the waste facility (the dump). Over here the limit you can carry in your vehicle is like 15 gallons to transport to the dump per visit. You'll have to be a resident to use it free of course. I find it easier to go to the waste facility rather than Kragen since they are full many times I been there.

I believe it should be easy and free to recycle oil and other automotive waste. If they say how important it is to dispose waste but make it harder: by limiting how much they can take, full tanks, paying, etc. then maybe thats why people dump it illegally and put a container of used oil on the sidewalk.
