ON, Canada eh?
Although I think Volvos are for the most part ugly (albeit better today) I wanted to know if they are as if not better than the older generation for durability?

Anyone here own a new generation Volvo and can compare it?

Well, I own a 2010 v70 but haven't had it long enough to compare durability to my old 760 Turbo, that I bought with 100k and sold at 300k. But, with the old one the only thing that I consider extra durable with it was the B230 engine ,car body, and the leather seats. Many other things were not so durable.
Right now I am impressed with the build quality of the V70 and the trip fuel mileage(>30mpg).

The little things don't bother me... For me sticking points are engine/transmission and A/C system longevity.

All else can be fixed or left broken but those 3 things above are too important to me.

I don't own a newer Volvo but do work on them. I also own a "real" Volvo(1991 240 Brick). I used to think there was no uglier car than the old brick. That is,until I rode in one and saw the durability of the drivetrains. I keep saying I am going to sell mine but never can do it. That said, Volvo has changed drastically over the years. Some will say for the worse and some will say for the better. I say there's nobody wanting to hoard a post RWD Volvo that I know of. In order to try to appeal for the massed they lost alot of their identity and the faithful RWD crowd jumped ship in legions. Newer Volvos are like most other USA market cars. They all have their problems. Complex and un-neccessary systems to meet our market's needs/wants not to mention stupid emissions requirements that do little other than add repair costs.

How new are you talking about? I think the early 2000s had some transmission issues. So, I would avoid 2000, 2001,2002 at least. My 80s 760 turbo transmission was rebuilt at about 200k. I think the new(2008-2011)3.2 I-6 engine is VERY good. The 6 speed (DCT)transmissions have been out since 2008 and have been very reliable so far.

Exactly... Gotta keep it Ice-Cold year round or I will feel out of my element because it's winter hear the other 9 months of the year!

i had an 83 240 for 15 yrs that never needed anything but the routine stuff. my wife has a 01 s80, nice car and so far so good, i'd say the newer ones need more attention as in more frequent service to keep them going but i feel the newer one is a good solid vehicle.

I owned a 1966 model, 4-dr, 122S for 20+ yrs, from late '75 to Sept. '97. People always asked me, "Is that Columbo's car?"

I had to disappoint them & tell 'em no, that's a Peugot, this is a Volvo.

If you want to see me run like you-know-what- or take a shot at somebody- just let 'em try to sell me a Volvo.

I had mine, & there's *NOBODY* big enough to make me have another!

They've been pretty good to me. Currently in my driveway:
'85 240 300K
'98 V70 130K
02 S40 81K

I do all service myself aside from tires/alignment. Maintenance on the newer ones is about the same as any other current FWD car. FCP Groton is a great source for parts.

I love my 2000 XC! It was sort of the transitional car between the old 850s and the new generation.

The 2001 and 2002 were the cars with bad transmissions. Nearly all after the 01-02 period are rock solid with the exception of the T6 XC90s until just a while back.

I actually do like the design of the new wagons an sedans, although I am quite fond of the older stuff too.

My ideal garage would be:

1999 V70R T5-M
2007 XC70
2011 C30

But I do love working on my 2000 XC. Very reliable cars if you keep up the maintenance (it's never left me stranded anywhere) and doing the work yourself is very easy on these cars. I second the FCP Groton, great website!

Haha, if you were from SoCal I could understand your teasing, but Pennsylvania? come on!
The humidex in Toronto was 45C last week. We both currently have the exact same average temperature right now according to UNISYS.

Humidity Index and it's what the temperature feels like with the humidity and how it affects you the same way if the humidity wasn't there but the temperature increased to the same point.

45 without humidity = 35 + level of humidity = Feels like 45
