Hello to all on this interesting forum.
Based in the UK so I suspect the vehicles I have are different to many US or Canadian specs but I think the engines are fitted in other NA spec vehicles.
First vehicle is a London Taxi. 2007, that I rent to a friend that is a Taxi Driver.
Have not done any UOA but I am.trying to find a lab to do these near me.
The engine in this is a VM diesel engine (2500cc). Similar to 2.8 diesel engine fitted to later Jeep Liberty. The 2.5 version was fitted to the earlier Jeep Cherokee(Liberty) from 2002/2004 in the UK.
The normal oil change interval 10k miles. With a 10w40 B4 oil. Either semi synthetic or synthetic.
Though you can also use a 0w40 B4 oil.
I have been doing 5000 mile changes with a Chevron 10w40 Semi Synthetic from Costco. And also having some services done by a taxi trade garage. Using a Q8 10w40 Full Synthetic and a 10000mile interval when using this.
After reading the forum I have bought 10litres of 10w40 semi synthetic Maxlife, due to some minor oil leaks and also to see if it helps.in anyway.
The engine is just shy of 170k miles now. Original engine and autobox.
I basically want to stretch out the oil change interval. I hope to do UOA and have emailed Blackstone to ask if they have a lab in the UK or if I can send samples to them.
I am also thinking about a bypass setup aswell.
The vehicle does 50/50 highway/urban.
Temperatures are obviously not as hot as parts of the States and the vehicle is used in late afternoon into the night. Once started up the vehicle will be run pretty much solidly throughout a shift with an hours downtime part way through shift. Shift length 9/11 hrs.
In the operating conditions these Taxis operate this model (TX4) has some incidences of engine problems specifically bottom end problems relating to poor lubrication. And probably a cavalier attitude to maintenance. It isn't unusual for a Taxi to be run up to 16k on semi.synthetic oil !!
The oil filter I use is a Hengst. Nice big filter. And the sump capacity it just under 7 litres.
Any opinion will be gratefully recieved.
I will either continue with Maxlife if it helps the slight oil leakage. But I am also open to using Mobil 1 0w40 Turbo Diesel or the new 0w40 New Life.
I have been using Mobil1 TD for 2 yrs in the wifes Clio DCi on 9k intervals and recently.switched to New Life. Both the same price in Costco. Just under £30 for 5 litres. Cheap for UK as it can cost up to £55 for 5 litres but probably a bit more expensive than the US.
The other vehicle I would like some opinon regarding my oil change regimen is a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. A 2.5 turbo diesel automatic. I think the engine and trans is similar to that fitted to the Nissan Titan in the US.
The normal interval for an oil change on this is 18k miles. Time wise I think.it is every two years if mileage isn't reached.
The specs for that vehicle are 5w30 C3 oil. Sorry I don't know the American equivalent only ACEA specs. But it is mid saps as it has a DPF.
This time around (@98k) I changed the oil and put in Carlube 5w30 Fully Synth C3 and a Nissan filter.
I have a Hengst filter already and intend to use Castrol Edge 5w30 C3 oil. It has 104k on it at the moment but the Carlube oil was an emergency puchase as I needed the oil changed that day and Costco was closed. The cost for the Carlube oil.was £72 for 10 litres. The sump on the Pathfinder takes about 7.5 litres. I feel concerned about using this oil in an expensive vehicle with a camchain that is known for having issues.
Prior to my purchase the P/Finder had full Nissan history and had been serviced every 18k. Thankfully it was 90% Highway ( round the M25 from Crawley to Dartford )
I had thought about a bypass but then thought that as Nissan say it can do 18k.on.the 5w30 C3 then I should have no issues running a good C3 oil.up to 10k. The miles it does now are more half and half city/highway.
I also run a Yamaha X Max 250 and Volvo V50 2.0 D estate but that is for another thread.
I must admit though that 5w30 oil is very common in the UK. My Volvo.uses it (basically a Ford engine) in A1/B1 or A5/B5 spec and my previous Mondeo 2005 and also diesel used the same oil.specs. I changed the oil at 7/8000 intervals witha Ford filter and that car now has over 200k on it and is run by a friend. The earlier Ford diesel engines are camchain and that old Mondeo is original with no major components replaced other than one alternator at 190k. So I have a lot of faith in Ford oil specs and 5w30 inparticular.
I am interested in what forum members have to say. Though filters are not as varied in the UK. But I tend to go for decent quality ones such as Hengst amd Bosch. Unless it is a paper element then I go to the original manufacturer ones from a dealer.
My intentions are to minimise the common camchain issues on the Pathfinder and run it up to 300k at least over the next 10 yrs. The Taxi I hope to get 500k out of the engine before jt needs a rebuild. The engine has been in Taxis since late 2006 so not many have gone past 200k. A lot have serious bottom end problems before 140k. In all honesty mine runs very well at almost 170k.
Aorry for the long post. And thanks in advamce for any hints and tips. I must admit using Amsoil products does interest me. As does using better/long.life oil filters.
