Just purchased new 86 inch offset ditch flail mower and manual calls for SAE EP 90W Gear Oil for Gearbox.

I will be pulling this with a TYM T-1104 Tractor with 98 HP at the PTO. Just bought 45 gallons of Shell Delvac Univ Tractor Fluid API GL-4 (Also known as Mobil Fluid 424) to use for 4 tractors on the same fluid.

Will this perform correctly in the mower gear box? I originally looked for the fluid they recommend, but like the rest of the manual, this fluid does not seem to exist and I really don't want another fluid to keep up with. Gearbox probably holds 2-4 quarts, but of course, they do not say!

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

I'd wager the hydraulic fluid is too thin.

ISO220/SAE90.... did the manufacturer mention GL-4 or GL-5?

Contact the manufacturer for more info or specific brand recommendations.

In a pinch, I wouldn't fear the GL4/GL5 nonLS automotive/marine diff/xfer/trans gear oils.

Most stuff seems to use a 90 wt or 140 wt. THF is g l4 and is thinner than a 90 wt. I would contact the manufacture of the mower or the gear box manufacturer. Gear boxes are pricey

AFAIK: SAE 90 EP is a gl-5 gear oil its used in some specific applications iirc the STI or WRX spec'ed it a few years back.

Edit: after looking it seems like some GL-4 are also called that... so it seems clear as mud.

Shell Delvac Univ Tractor Fluid
9.3 at 100 ° C and 55 at 40 ° C

Try Mobil 1 Delvac 50
17.5 at 100 ° C and 132 at 40 ° C

their other flail mowers spec 85w-140 gl-5 in their gearbox
so my 2cents want a thick 90wt(or thicker) and gl-5.

your mobil 424 fluid is not thick enough and not EP enough IMO.

It is not an EP lube,

I found a 75W90 Synthetic Gear Lube. It is a GL-5 made by Sinopec. Does it look like that would work well for this mower gearbox application?

But this oil costs $375 for a five gallon jug. How about

Ultra1Plus SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Oil, API GL-4 | 5 Gallon Pail that costs $140 for 5 gallon pail delivered from Amazon. It is also available in GL-5.
