New Tesla Model YL unveiled in China

I wonder about the practicality of a 6-seater SUV in China. No basis to claim the questioning but my own perceptions of life in China. Am I off base?

My neighbors have a 3 row Model Y. You have to be an infant to fit in the back,if you can get there at all.
And forget about cargo space.

The stretch Model Y has a ton of potential. Time will tell.

It's still smaller than the model X. Why make a longer Y? Make the X into 6 seater. Doesn't make sense to me. No internal pictures at all.

The X is only made in Fremont, is pretty dated and is expensive. The Y is one of the best selling cars in the world. It is far cheaper to manufacture and has the more modern mfg lines. It is made in Tesla factories around the world.

I wonder how much $$$.

Looks like every other Tesla. I prefer the sedan styled ones better.

So they wasted time and effort on this instead of a first world model 2? Meanwhile the Chinese will just steal the tech, push BYD and others, etc.

I prefer the sedans as well; I am not much of a SUV guy anyways.
Have you driven the Juniper? The refreshed are far better vehicles.
Regarding price, Tesla focuses on "building the machine that builds the machine", or optimizing a company's production system and manufacturing processes, particularly through automation, to significantly increase output and efficiency. It's about building the factory itself as a core part of the product. Effectively managing current and tomorrow's cost to manufacture allows for price flexibility.

There have been Model 2 sightings in Fremont and Austin; we can take that with whatever grain of salt.
I have to believe cheaper EVs, and ICE, will be needed to compete with China.

It’s simple. The grandparents live at home in China, not shuffled off to an old folks home like in the USA. So you have mom and dad, one or two children and one set of grandparents. The other set of grandparents are at one of the siblings’ home. Home is usually a small apartment, but they all fit in there.

I don't think there is much of anything to steal. Tesla has open patents and runs linux as the base for its OS. BYD has already surpassed Tesla in some ways. Tesla is using BYD LFP blade batteries in some cars so it seems elmo has no problem doing business with the China.
with the exception of the S and truck all Tesla cars look the same to me too.

Our Asian families in Silicon Valley are the same way. I admire them for the way they respect and care for their elders.

Tesla's "open patents" require one to reciprocate in kind. Your patents are opened to Tesla.

Linux's copyleft does not infect applications written to run on Linux.

Giga Berlin primarily uses NMC 4680 batteries for the Model Y. While Tesla also uses BYD LFP for some vehicles, particularly in the standard range models, Giga Berlin is focused on the NMC 4680 cells for the Model Y.
They use some in China, but mostly CATL.

I have to believe Tesla is gonna make some of the recent Juniper owners mad, because the real 3rd row would have been a better fit. And I'm sure some prospective buyers will wait for the longer car to be available here. I bet it sells well.
