New steering wheel cover - outgassing?

Hi all. Not sure where this question belongs so I put it here. I recently got a steering wheel cover from Canadian Tire and while I like the feel of it for driving, it sure stinks. From holding onto it my hands also absorb some of the smell/chemical causing the smell. From one I'd purchased not too long ago, I know that this smell will eventually fade to something more tolerable but is there anything I can do to speed that up? I assume it's caused by outgasing of whatever materials went into making it.....

Any ideas welcome.

Kinda hard to buy an aftermarket steering wheel if you like your airbags..

I figured we were talking about some old American car with a skinny steering wheel that basically needs a steering wheel cover. My '84 Chevy had one of those wheels. No airbag, naturally...

Another option would be to buy a decent leather steering wheel cover. I wouldn't want plastizicer from a vinyl cover on my hands.

I'd try a low level of heat (say something on the order of what a car interior would be on a sunny, hot summer day).

We just had to test some plastic electrical assemblies at elevated temperature at work (120F then 150F). For the first few houurs they stunk bad, but after a few hours at temperature the smell disipated.

Once again "heat is your friend".

thanks for the replies - guess I should've specified make/model/year in the original post but figured it wouldn't really matter. True leather wrap/cover would be nice and I might order one eventually.

Rick - that's abou what I was thinking. I didn't want to put the thing in the oven but maybe I'll set up a little electric heater/fan on it overnight or something.
