Doing some more research on this.... is it possible an Apple device is responsible for bringing down my home network?
There are quite a few of these on the web:

My wife has several Apple devices (iPhone 6s and iPad something). Looking at my ip traffic history, these devices at various times seem to be uploading ****load of data to the cloud, chewing up my entire available upload bandwidth, which I don't have much to begin with. This week my wife is out of town, and surprisingly, I'm not experiencing any slowdowns on my network. Coincidence?
I have now set up bandwidth limiters for these Apple devices. We'll see if that helps. Alternatively, I should send my wife out of town more often.
BTW, I did buy a new router (Asus AC56U), but I haven't even opened it. If bandwidth limiting fixes my problem, I won't need it.
