Went to the San Jose Auto Show, not to be confused with the big SF Show at Moscone. The star of the show was the Prius Prime. This one had a solar roof, making it a perpetual motion machine. J/K... They will sell a bazillion of these. Toyota didn't bother to reinvent the wheel; this car is very Model 3 like in appearance. The hybrid is out at a few dealerships, probably with markup. The plug in hybrid Prime is expected in March or April. I believe you can order one on-line @ MSRP, not sure. They did not have a Venza, which I wanted to check out.

Finally they designed a decent looking Prius . It's a prototype tho .
Ha ha! The barker gal's 1st words to the crowd were, "Is this the best looking Prius ever?" Lotta cheers and laughs.
It says prototype, but I am not sure that's the right word. There are a few hybrids at dealers now, so I don't see how it can be much different. Who knows?

Looks nice but I'll keep my 2007. It's not fast and it's not good looking but it costs peanuts to run and maintain.

Forgive my ignorance, but I feel like I read somewhere, maybe on this forum, that the Prius have ni-cad batteries whereas other Toyota hybrids have lithium-ion. Wouldn’t that be a big negative? My knowledge of hybrids is next to none, but just made me scratch my head hearing that.

The current gen Prius has Ni-Mh batteries on the AWD-e version as the chemistry does better in the cold, per Toyota marketing. This is the same tech they've used since 1997. (!) My Prime, OTOH, uses lithium, and I think the base Prius also uses lithium.

I think they just have supply chain issues and or are slowly moving to lithium chemistry. Toyota is very conservative in engineering and won't put all its eggs in one basket at once.

Looks nice, but I doubt it’ll sell that well. Prius sales peaked 10 years ago in the USA and it actually sells quite poorly. Toyota (USA) only sold 36,919 Priuses in 2022 vs 236,655 in 2012. IMO, it should have been a pure EV with 300 miles of range.

Found some pics on the net.....actually looks halfway decent. And nice that it's a traditional hybrid instead of a full plug-in EV.

Regular as is $4.20 and $4.55 at Costco here again. These cars, with over 50mpg, will fly off the shelves.
