New Pennzoil racing oil

Pennzoil is introducing a new racing oil at Indy this year. It is made up of a re-refined base oil. Interesting since they are so heavily invested in touting the benefits of their GTL base oil.

It seems they are advertising greenhouse emissions reducing benefits more than anything performance-wise.

Racing venues are under pressure on the GG issue. It depends on management how serious they are about it. It’s pretty much all optics. Any type of entertainment business is under fire. Now, back to the oil.

I would think the actual race car emissions are a drop in a bucket compared to the entirety of race operations, including transport to tracks.

Just saw a Shell ad for “ renewable racing fuel “ I believe these cars run on E85.

They claim 100 percent renewable and term it another bio based fuel not gasoline to make flames visible.

"Shell’s 100% Renewable Race Fuel powering all competing vehicles in the INDYCAR SERIES in 2023 contains a significant mix of second-generation ethanol combined with another renewable component to create the 100% renewable formulation that will reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by at least 60 percent compared to fossil-based gasoline,” said Bassem Kheireddin, Shell technology manager of motorsports. “We are very proud to bring it to the series, and it's a step to decarbonize motorsport.”

Indy used methanol until 2007 and switched to ethanol. In 2023 they switched to E85 made from 2nd generation ethanol. Not sure if this article refers to the fuel at the Indy 500 but it says the ethanol is sources from Brazil and is made from sugarcane waste.

I know a guy who cleans the area under his oil pan, drains his crankcase of his new vehicle at 5,000 miles and uses it in his beater for another 10,000 miles.
