Hmm, I believe they are talking about the lining inside the can. Why it’s there I’m not sure. I agree it’s hard to tell.

Thanks for all the input. Here is a bowl of my first attempt. I may freeze some for later and next time cut back on the onions a bit. Also I threw the clam juice in. The recipe said to “ reserve” it. Reserve it for what?
I just tried to order that Quahog republic chowder. They don't deliver. Too bad. I don't have time to drive to Massachusetts.
