Hi everyone I just recently purchased my brand new 2024 Tacoma with the 4cyl turbocharged engine. I plan to keep this truck a very long time and I’m super anal with my vehicles and maintence. This is my first turbocharged vehicle and I’m really on the fence about what oil to run and what interval to go by . Do you guys think I I should use Toyota genuine motor oil, or should I run something like amsoil signature series? I’m thinking 3k miles oil changes are probably a good idea too. Any thoughts or comments I’d appreciate, thank you!

Welcome!

GTDI engines are certainly in vogue, and the OCI duration is debatable, depending upon who you talk to. Just realize you're not going to get any consensus here on BITOG.

I will say that my opinion is that if you're committed to 3k mile OCIs, just about any API SP lube will do fine; no need to overspend.

Thanks makes sense, the good thing about the Toyota engines though is they have d4s, direct and port fuel injection so carbon build up isn’t so much a problem as other brands. I’ve always heard great things about the TGMO made by Exxon Mobil . Does anyone have data on that to back what I’ve heard?

How many miles per year do you think you'll be driving? If you're planning on changing it every 3-5k miles, any of the top tier off the shelf oils will be more than adequate. You may even want to consider the new Valvoline Restore & Protect oil.

The next tier up from the top off the shelf oils would be something like Amsoil SS or HPL.

7k tops but preferably 4-6k and with an SP, a40, 229.51, and ll-01 rated euro is what I'd use if it was mine. Wouldn't bother with anything lesser in a turbo engine I intend on owning for the long haul. Use premium filters like the endurance too. Don't be afraid to leave them on for a few runs if you're doing short intervals.

Most likely 5-7k miles a year

Very nice truck!! If it were mine and only did 5-7k per year, I’d go with the Amsoil SS or HPL and do a yearly oil change.

Hey I know that truck! :ROFLMAO:

Welcome fellow TW member!

I plan on 6 mo or 5,000 miles on mine. Probably will be around 4,000 miles on the 6mo plan. 0w20 while in warranty.
I recognize your picture haha I figured that had to be you !

Welcome to the madness!

I'll be letting my dealer do the oil changes for a little bit. They use bulk Mobil 1 on Tacoma's. After that I'll probably just use whatever name brand GF-6A that is on sale. Toyota's aren't really that picky. The TGMO is indeed a good oil produced by M1. Has a slightly different add pack, but is a little speedy. But if you're driving as little as you do, it won't matter that much.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking just stick to Toyota oil after all these engines were torture tested by Toyota with that oil. It’s got tons of Molly from what I understand . I just love discussing these things

What does the manual say? Do they allow for an increase in viscosity depending on usage? (The manual for our 4Runner allows it.)
