Looks like Mac wants me to pay for software that can open text files that were created on free AppleWorks software a few years ago.

Is there any freeware for OS X Tiger that can open AppleWorks files?

I don't know if any of the linked products will work. I don't want to convert from Mac to PC.

I guess I can just move all my AppleWorks files from my new Mac to my old Mac, open the files on the old Mac in AppleWorks, safe those files as plain text files, and move those files back to the new Mac. Text Edit in OS X can of course read plain text files. It's just inconvenient. OS X came with a trial versions of Word, but I didn't need more than a very simple Text Editing program and I didn't buy Word. I have Abi Word, but it seems to be unable to read AppleWorks files.

PS: Frank, do you have a Mori Labs Level 5 security clearance?

I appreciate this information. I have some old Appleworks files I would like to open. If I could open them on my Vista computer that would be great.

I found out that if I name an AppleWorks document .txt or .txt, I can open it in Text Edit. Some of the formatting gets lost and a lot of junk (I guess that's the formatting "code"?) shows up in the header (?) and footer (?). No big deal. It's fine for converting my secret Eyes Only files fairly conveniently into RTF or plain text files.

I was surprised that apparently it is possible to get a version of AppleWorks that will run in Mac OS X. I thought that Apple had dropped AppleWorks. I might get that version of AppleWorks and open the old files up, go to print and instead of printing save them as PDF files that can be read by any computer that has Adobe Reader. The old Microsoft Office for the Macintosh files I should be able to open in Microsoft Office. Maybe I could convert them into PDFs also. I don't know. There are a few old AppleWorks files it would be nice to save.
